Tesco is selling Marmite houmous and it’s already dividing opinions

Houmous has fast become one of the nation’s favourite dips – in fact, arburtons recently found it to be one of the most popular food items us Brits are likely to take to a picnic. And while the classic version of the dip (which is essentially just chickpeas, tahini, garlic and lemon juice), is hard to beat, its vast popularity has got to have something to do with its ability to mix so well with other flavours, too. These days we don’t even bat an eyelid at the plethora of options available on the shelves: caramelised onion, red pepper, sweet chilli and beetroot are all viable houmous options.

Well, now we can also add Marmite to that list. Yep, Tesco has just started selling Marmite Houmous and naturally it’s already dividing opinions. While both are popular dips/spreads in their own right (the pandemic even instigated a Marmite shortage), when it comes to the notorious yeast extract spread, as the old saying goes, ‘you either love it or you hate it’, and we think the same might apply to this new houmous variety.

If you’re a Marmite fanatic we’re sure you’ll relish this news and are probably already on your way out to your local Tesco Express, however even those in the ‘hate it’ camp might want to consider giving this a go before writing it off altogether – the addition of Marmite to the classically Middle Eastern dip might seem bizarre, but in fact it promises an extra salty, umami flavour kick, which can only be a delight for the tastebuds.

Whether for dipping crudités, spreading on a bagel or dolloping on a salad, this could be the new houmous flavour you’ve been looking for to shake up your mealtimes.

And if history has taught us anything, the addition of Marmite to other foods can only make them better – case in point, M&S’s launch of Marmite butter, Marmite cream cheese and Marmite cheese twists earlier this year.

Marmite Houmous is currently available exclusively at Tesco in stores and online at £1.50 for a 200g pot.
