With lockdown restrictions set to ease over the next few months, it is not surprising that Google has seen an 89 per cent increase in searches for ‘staycations’ over the past month. But, if you’re not fussed about a secluded coastal staycation or even glamping, however, you might be interested to know what the most popular cities for a UK staycation are.
Experts from OnBuy.com used SEM Rush to reveal where in the UK people are most searching online for and the results might surprise you with London left out of the top ten.
That’s right, the UK’s most searched city was actually York with 104 searches a month per 100 people. Famed for York Minster and St Mary’s Abbey as well as The Shambles, cobbled streets that inspired the Harry Potter’s series, the North-Eastern city received a total of 168,980 Google searches and 96,560 monthly searches specifically for ‘hotels in York’.
In second, was the south-western city of Bath with 40 searches per 100 people. Famed for its beautiful Georgian buildings, cobbled streets and the Roman baths and natural hot springs, it will come as no surprise that there were 30,250 searches for ‘things to do in Bath’ this summer.

Interestingly, OnBuy.com also looked at the least popular cities in the UK and found that Westminster, an inner London city and borough, was the least searched for. Despite being the chosen location for many a royal wedding, it seems like London really has fallen out of favour since we entered lockdown then.
