Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, has travelled all over the country (and indeed, the world) in the name of royal duty – but according to one insider, there are four must-have items that she carries with her wherever she goes.
Inside every designer clutch, tote and shopper, there’s a list of essentials that Kate always has tucked away, and as you might expect, they’re perfectly practical pieces that most of us have in our bags too.
Marcia Moody, author of Kate: A Biography, The Duchess of Cambridge, says that Kate’s four key items are: a compact mirror, lip balm, blotting paper (to remove any excess shine) and a handkerchief.
Nothing out of the ordinary there, you might think – until you realise that it doesn’t include a phone. This is actually a detail that was noted by former Vogue editor Alexandra Schulman when the duchess took part in a cover shoot for the magazine’s centenary issue in 2016.
‘Along with a generator for the whole set, broadband had been brought in to the location,’ Schulman wrote after observing Kate on set, ‘and while everyone else constantly checked their phones, she never brought hers out – not once.’
Regal handbag etiquette has also been the subject of much discussion when it comes to Queen Elizabeth II, who is almost always seen carrying a neat, compact bag (usually from luxury label Launer) with her during public engagements.
Sally Bedell Smith, who wrote Elizabeth the Queen: The Woman Behind The Thronewriting, disclosed in The Lady magazine that the Queen’s handbag usually contains reading glasses, mint lozenges and a fountain pen.
Another royal biographer reported previously that buried alongside everyday items such as a mirror and lipstick is always a crisply folded £5 note to donate to the church collection on Sundays. How unusual it must feel to pull it out and see one’s face!
