5 things you might not know about the new 007 Lashana Lynch

Debates on whether Bond films would ever change with the times and diversify their characters have been ongoing for years. But it looks like the franchise has finally answered our prayers with its latest casting of the all-important role of 007.

While Daniel Craig is set to reprise his role has James Bond in the 25th film, the secret agent will no longer have the number 007. Instead, black British actress Lashana Lynch has been cast as the new agent after Bond retires from MI6.

An anonymous ‘movie insider’ revealed the news to the Mail on Sunday, explaining that 31-year-old Lashana, whose character is named Nomi, will make her debut in the highly-anticipated film as she is sent to track down Bond and bring him out of retirement so the two can work on a new mission.

‘There is a pivotal scene at the start of the film where M [played by Ralph Fiennes] says, ‘Come in 007′, and in walks Lashana who is black, beautiful and a woman,’ the insider said. ‘It’s a popcorn-dropping moment. Bond is still Bond but he’s been replaced as 007.’

The film’s director Cary Joji Fukunaga has yet to confirm the news. However, as well as this milestone moment for the franchise, we’re convinced Bond 25 will have at least a bit more of a pro-women approach than previous Bond films, considering the fact that Fleabag and Killing Eve‘s Phoebe Waller-Bridge has been enlisted as a co-writer.

But for now, let’s get ourselves familiar with our reported brand new, female 007. Here’s everything we know about Lashana Lynch:

She made her big screen debut in 2012

Lashana starred in her first film back in 2012 when she was cast in Fast Girls, a story about a team of street smart relay sprinters competing in a World Championship, alongside Lily James.

She’s already been in a Marvel film

However, her Hollywood breakthrough came earlier this year with the release of Captain Marvel. Lashana starred in the blockbuster hit as fighter pilot Maria Rambeau, the best friend of Brie Larson’s protagonist, Carol Danvers.

She has Vogue-approved style credentials

The fashion bible has praised Lashana’s ‘noteworthy’ red carpet looks, particularly pointing out the bright fuschia Michael Costello gown she wore to the Captain Marvel premiere in London and the pale blue Emilia Wickstead suit she sported for the Bond announcement, where she posed alongside her co-stars including Naomi Harris, Lea Seydoux and Ana de Armas.

She’s a fan of Ed Sheeran

Judging by her reaction to the release of Ed Sheeran’s track list for his latest album, No.6 Collaborations Project, the actress is a fan of both Ed and some of the popular artists he has enlisted for his features including R&B singer H.E.R, Yebba, British Afroswing star J Hus and popstar Khalid. She certainly has good taste in music!

She is a pro-women advocate

Anyone who follows Lashana on social media can tell that she is passionate about pro-women projects and often champions charities that support women facing difficult issues and circumstances, including Action Aid UK. She also isn’t afraid to make feminist statements, and we love her for it!
