The London Resort theme park: What to expect from the UK’s answer to Disneyland

Thrill seekers assemble, we’re finally getting our very own equivalent to Disneyland in the UK. The opening of £3.5 billion theme park The London Resort was first announced last year, but now a public consultation is underway, which means we’re one step closer to opening.

The London Resort will cover 535 acres across the Swanscombe Peninsula near Dartford, a a short 17 minute train ride away from London’s King Cross St Pancras. To put that scale into perspective, that’s the size of 136 Wembley Stadiums – huge.

Construction is tipped to begin as early as 2021, marking the biggest project of its kind in Europe since Disneyland Paris in 1992. However, while it is already being described as the British take on Disneyland, the theme park actually has no relation to the company and is its own entity. Instead, it has partnered with the BBC, ITV Studios and Paramount Pictures.

So what can we expect? Well, for starters, the giant theme park will offer seven different lands for visitors: The High Street, The Studios, The Woods, The Isles, The Kingdom, The Jungle and Starport, each of which will have its own unique offering.

The London Resort

The High Street, for example, serves as a gateway to the theme park, and will include restaurants, hotels and an impressive waterpark. At The Studios, powered by Paramount Pictures, visitors will experience ‘exhilarating thrills of big, blockbuster features’ such as ‘explosive action, high-octane car chases and high-stakes espionage.’ Meanwhile in The Jungle, they’ll discover an ‘ancient secrets, surprising discoveries and strange mystical artefacts.’

If you’re a Star Wars fans, sci-fi themed Starport will be the place for you, while small children will love The Woods, where they will be met with all sorts of enchanting experiences and endless rides.

‘A bespoke entertainment district, including the provision of 3,500 hotel rooms, will be devoted to a full-suite of hospitality experiences. There will be something for every generation and food and drink for every taste,’ the makers say on the theme park’s website.

‘But it’s the rides and the experiences which will take The London Resort to another level. Brands from across literature, television, music, film and entertainment, are being hand-picked to create unique experiences never previously imagined.’

As mentioned above, the public consultation for the park has begun, with plans expected to be submitted later this year. However, we’re going to have to wait a while longer before we can plan our trips to the new theme park as it’s not set to open its doors to visitors until at least 2024.

A second resort is set to follow elsewhere in the UK, with a scheduled opening of 2029.
