Spring is well and truly here, which means one thing – spring dresses. Off with the tights, begone chunky boots and goodbye turtlenecks, it’s time to don a lightweight dress and welcome in the warmer temperatures of spring.
Social engagements might still be off the cards for a little while longer, but that’s no excuse not to treat yourself to a new dress or two for the new season. Making an effort to get dressed up can do wonders for our own mental wellbeing, even if it is just for yourself – case in point, Amanda Holden‘s extravagant at-home outfits of late.
But what to pick? There’s a style of dress to suit everyone this season, with forgiving loose silhouettes and demure midi hemlines leading the way. Florals are obviously everywhere, but this season make sure yours are tiny, dainty, ditzy flowers – add those to a long-length button down dress for a totally wearable yet ultra feminine look. If you want to go bold, big leafy jungle prints will serve you well.
If you’re looking to tick the big trend boxes this spring, look for square necklines, puff sleeves (seriously, the bigger the better here) and ruching details. Ruffles, whether on a hemline, sleeve or neckline, will also go a long way in elevating an ordinary outfit.
Tiered styles are still going strong from last year, as is the seventies trend, so make sure you’ve got at least one denim dress in your arsenal – comfortable, practical and versatile, that’s a trend we can get on board with. Team yours with big sunnies and an even bigger floppy straw hat.
As for prints? Gingham is big this season, in any colour – black and white works perfectly for a classic daytime look, or chose bright pink or green to stand out from the crowd. Topshop in particular have a lot of great gingham and check pieces in at the moment. And the polka dot bubble is still yet to burst, so if you didn’t bag yourself a spotty dress last summer, now’s the time to do so.
Colour-wise, anything goes – from bright, April showers-defying pops of colour to soft sorbet shades and neutral beiges, trust in the rainbow this season. Spring is truly the beginning of ice cream season, so why not honour that with ice cream and sorbet shades, perfect to brighten up even the greyest of April showers?
And if you think it’s too soon for strappy cami styles, think again – just sling over a plain white tee for now and you’ve got yourself two outfits for the price of one.
