Spotify just launched a special pet playlist and a podcast for dogs

Finding a way to keep your pet entertained when you’re busy or even worse, having to leave them at home alone despite the adorable doe-eyed look they give you on your way out, can be the hardest part of the day for many of us.

But what if there was a way you could ensure your beloved dog or cat would have the time of their lives in your absence? Well, Spotify may be the answer.

The global music streaming platform has just launched personalised Pet Playlists and a special podcast exclusively for dogs called My Dog’s Favourite Podcast, meaning your furry friends will now have something more enticing to keep them occupied during your absence.

Following research which highlighted that nearly three quarters of UK pet owners claim that audio helps sooth and calm their pets at home, Spotify has taken the initiative to create pet-friendly content that has been specifically curated to entertain your pets.

The new playlists provide users with music based on their tastes and their pet’s character attributes. For instance, if your pet has an energetic personality, they’re likely to receive a playlist with more upbeat music and similarly, if it has more relaxed characteristics it would naturally receive a playlist of more mellow tunes.

Each Pet Playlist features approximately 30 tracks and with 74 per cent of UK owners already playing music for their pets, it seems like a natural progression to make it even easier. If you have a dog then you’re in (even more) luck, because not only do you have the playlists but Spotify’s dog podcast, which has been created in partnership with animal experts.

As explained by the streaming service, My Dog’s Favourite Podcast features a mix of soothing music, dog-directed speech and original sound design to provide comfort  and help alleviate stress for dogs who are temporarily home alone.

Alex Benjamin, Pet Psychologist and lecturer at York University, whose 2008 research study ‘Who’s A Good Boy’ explored the role of human voices in stimulating animal behaviour, commented on the launch, saying: ‘Dogs are extremely social animals but, in order to fit in with our busy lives, may spend some time by themselves during the day.’

Benjamin added: ‘My Dog’s Favourite Podcast” is a bespoke podcast that is designed to encourage your dog to relax through calming gentle praise and story-like speech accompanied by original music and gentle ambient sounds designed to help mask startling sounds of the outside world such as traffic, car doors slamming or the bins being emptied, for example.

‘I hope that the podcast becomes a fun and useful resource for owners to explore with their dogs while they are at home together as well as when their dog is alone for short periods.’
