This £7.95 lip balm is being hailed as a winter saviour by Reddit users

Reddit, the online social forum website, is the place on the internet where all the best (and weirdest) discussions take place. While anyone can take to Reddit to discuss anything (and we really mean anything), the one section we’re always particularly interested in eavesdropping on is beauty Reddit.

Full of beauty geeks, make-up experts and cosmetics fans galore, it’s a delightfully passionate corner of the internet where beauty lovers go to swap tips, compare faves and share stories. And what beauty Reddit users particularly love to do is rate their favourite products, from moisturisers to concealers and everything in between.

The latest poll to be conducted has drilled down to determine the ultimate lip balm. Yes, that holy grail product that is so often overlooked but that none of us can live without. Lip balm is especially sought after at this time of year, when we’re constantly subjected to cold winds and fierce central heating which keep our lips chapped and dry.

There are hundreds of lip balm products out there, from ones that cost less than a pound to those upwards of £50 (yes, really!), and SPF-containing formulas to colour-tinted ones – this was always going to be a tough battle. But the good people of Reddit eventually settled on two winners – one SPF-loaded lip balm and one non-SPF lip balm.

For the reigning champion of SPF lip balms, Reddit crowned Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm SPF 25 with Shea Butter & Vitamin E the winner because of it’s longlasting results, scent, texture and the level of protection it offers against harmful UVA and UVB rays from the sun. And at just £7.95, it’s a bargain.

One Redditer commented: ‘I’ve loved using Jack Black’s lip balm. In winter I only have to reapply every 2-3 hours, compared to every 30 mins or so with previous ones, and I like the scent and feel of it. The fact it has SPF is a plus and it lasts me a long time with regular use (about 4 months). I recommend this to anyone looking for a new lip balm.’

As for the non-SPF lip balm winner, that went to Lanolips 101 Ointment Multi-Balm (specifically in peach). For just £8.99, this little lip balm packs a punch – it’s lanolin-based rather than petroleum, which mimics the molecular structure of human oils, meaning your lips are more replenished. It’s also enriched with vitamin E and users say the scent is nice without being overpowering and a little goes a long way, meaning it lasts a long time.

One fan of the Lanolips balm said: ‘It leaves a slightly glossy finish, and is long-lasting unlike other lip balms and petroleum-based products I’ve tried. I can eat/drink and it doesn’t completely wear off. Even when it does eventually wear off, my lips still feel hydrated and soft.’
