One of the best things about looking back at your childhood is reminiscing on special moments shared with your loved ones. And while that may mean something different to each of us, we celebrate them all the same.
That’s why, we were so touched to hear about the sweet tradition Prince Harry used to share with his late mother Princess Diana as a child.
According to former royal employee Carolyn Robb, who started working for Diana and her family at Kensington Palace as a personal chef in 1989, the princess spoiled Harry with sweet treats before breakfast.
Speaking to The Sunday Times ahead of the birth of Harry’s own first child with wife Meghan, Carolyn reflected on Harry’s childhood, explaining that he used to charm his mother into feeding his sweet tooth. In fact, the soon-to-be dad would eat 50p-sized treacle tarts first thing in the morning after gaining written permission from his mum.
Looking back at her time with the royal family, Carolyn even admitted that one time, Harry came into the kitchen before breakfast asking for a sweet treat with a note, handwritten by Diana, which read, ‘Mummy says it’s okay!’
She explained that a young Harry was such a big fan of her tarts that she kept a supply of them in the freezer so that they were available to heat up for him at any given time – with special permission from his mother, of course. As for his older brother Prince William, Caroyln said that he too had a sweet tooth, though he was more into chocolate biscuit cake than treacle tart.
Opening up about the overall experience of cooking for the family Carolyn – who is now 53 – recalled that Princess Diana was ‘very easy to cook for’ and ‘loved simple things’ like salads, souffles, mint lamb and stuffed aubergine. Prince Charles, on the other hand, was slightly ‘more demanding’ as he was adamant on dining on seasonal produce sourced from the garden. ‘You wouldn’t dare serve asparagus in December,’ Carolyn added.
