As we’re all aware of by now, Zara is no stranger to creating a viral dress. Last year, the brand’s infamous spotted midi quite literally took over the high street (and the internet), becoming so popular that it even had an Instagram account dedicated to it.
And this year, it looks like Zara is ready to do it all over again with a reinvented version of the staple summer piece.
The Spanish retailer has launched a new version of the dress which features the exact same tiered trapeze shape and polka-dot pattern of the original; it even has the same long-sleeve design. The only slight difference is the fabric.
Unlike its predecessor, the dress is made with crease-effect fabric which has a little sheen to it if the product shop is anything to go by. This means it is a bit more dressy and could be worn not only as a day dress but for special occasions or evening wear. In fact, it’s perfect for the upcoming wedding season.
As a result, it is slightly more pricey than the original dress, costing £49.99 – an extra £10 on the previous price tag. But if you loved the first version, the versatile update is worth every penny, and if last year’s success is anything to go by, it won’t be long before everyone snaps it up.
In 2019, reports from The Financial Times revealed that sales of the polka dot dress had contributed to a leap in sales for Zara’s parent company, Inditex. The Spanish group behind Zara, actually generated sales of €12.8 billion (about £11.5 billion) in the first half of 2019, and like-for-like sales rose by 5 per cent, with gross profit increasing 7 per cent to €7.3 billion (about £6.5 billion). Impressive stuff!
Plus, this increase in sales and profit at Zara stood out from other struggling retailers last year including Topshop, New Look and Marks & Spencer, so it’s little wonder they have brought it back.
