In fashion, the term ‘nude’ has often (and for too long) referred to a shade close to that of white skin, leaving women with darker skin tones without underwear that matches their own body.
Amongst other things, this is of course extremely unfair, something M&S is trying to rectify with its latest lingerie line, ‘new neutrals’. The range offers more colours, sizes and choice within its existing neutral bras and knickers collection, giving customers the freedom to complement or contrast your skin tone and the ability to opt for a size, style and colour that makes you look good and feel great, whether you prefer to compliment or contrast your skin tone.
M&S has one of the biggest size ranges on the high street (AA-H on bras and 6-24 on knickers) and has led the way on many aspects of lingerie inclusivity – from post-surgery bras to representative models – but say that in recent years, they recognised the need to do more to make their lingerie truly inclusive.
As such, the new neutrals collection was born and a wide selection of existing customer favourites – including T-shirt bras, ‘No VPL’ knickers, Flexifit crop tops and the exclusive Rosie for M&S silk and lace underwear line – are now available in five new shades: Opaline, Rich Amber, Rich Quartz, Rose Quartz and Topaz.
The launch is accompanied by a brilliant campaign titled ‘Nothing Neutral About It’, which features women of all colours, shapes and sizes in the new lingerie, celebrating their beauty and individuality.
Laura Charles, Director M&S Lingerie, comments: ‘We are the UK market leaders in bras and knickers and with that comes a responsibility to ensure what we sell makes all of our customers feel fantastic. We listened when our customers and colleagues told us we hadn’t got it right when it came to colour; both in the choices available and the way we talked about the neutral shades.
‘The global conversations around race and equality over the last 12 months spurred us to go faster in creating a better, more inclusive range. From the product offer to the names, to the marketing, we’ve worked hand in hand with our colleague Culture & Heritage network to deliver a campaign we’re proud of and an underwear range that provides more colours, more sizes and more choice so that all of our customers have the freedom to complement or contrast with their individual skin tone in a way that suits their own personal style.’
