These are the most popular coastal locations in the UK that homebuyers are flocking to

While moving to the seaside has always been a popular pipe dream for lots of Brits, this last year has seen us take the plunge in our droves, finally acting on those dreams and making it a reality. For some, that’s because remote working is now much more acceptable across the board, for others, lockdown made them reassess their priorities and where they feel they’d be happiest.

As such, certain coastal locations are booming in popularity with house hunters right now. According to Rightmove, not only are properties selling faster – ‘sold’ signs are going up 20 days quicker on average than in 2019 – the average asking price for a coastal home in the UK has risen by 7 per cent, compared to two years ago – that’s a faster growth rate than cities are currently experiencing.

Rightmove has reported on the eight most popular UK coastal locations and taking the top spot is Dartmouth in Devon, which has experienced an increase in buyer searches of 117 per cent in 2021 compared to 2019. With a spectacularly pretty harbour and plenty of shopping and dining spots, it’s easy to see why people are flocking to this idyllic part of the world.

Another Devon hotspot took second place: Salcombe. Searches for Salcombe are up 112 per cent, not far behind Dartmouth, however, the average asking price here is £793,856, miles above Dartmouth’s £437,420 – in fact, average asking prices here are among the highest in the West Country. With two huge sandy beaches, water sports are a way of life here, which attracts tourists and homebuyers alike, along with the bustling town full of boutiques, bistros and bars and fairs and festivals in the summer.
