10 of the most Instagrammable outdoor pools around the UK

A summer holiday abroad might be looking unlikely for you this year, but fear not. As we all learned last summer, our own fair British Isles are home to some of the most picturesque landscapes, beautiful beaches, exciting cities and idyllic rural villages in the world.

So a UK-based staycation certainly isn’t the lesser option this year, especially when you could also tie your holiday destination in with visiting one of the UK’s most Instagram-worthy outdoor pools.

Uswitch took it upon itself to find the most Instagrammable outdoor pools and lidos the UK has to offer by looking at how many times each one has been hashtagged on Instagram. And the results are truly stunning – at first glance you won’t believe some of these really are in the UK. As long as there’s sun, who cares that we’re not in the Maldives? (OK us a little bit).

10 of the most Instagrammable outdoor pools around the UK:

1. Jubilee Pool – Penzance

Also the number 1 UK staycation destination for 2021, Cornwall is home to Jubilee Pool, a beautiful lido overlooking the Cornish sea with picture perfect Art Deco architecture dating back to the 1930s. With over 6,000 hashtags on Instagram, this Penzance lido is miles ahead of the competition.

2. Tinside Lido – Plymouth

The huge semi-circular shape of Tinside Lido jutting out into the sea in Plymouth makes for a stunning outdoor pool setting – when the sun’s shining it’ll feel positively tropical here.

3. Saltdean Lido – Brighton

The 1930s truly was the golden age of British lidos, hence why many are built in an Art Deco style, the design movement synonymous with the era. Saltdean Lido in Brighton is a prime example of this style of architecture – it’s even been described as ‘one of the seven wonders of the English seaside’.

4. Sandford Parks Lido – Cheltenham

Surrounded by countryside, a trip to Sandford Parks Lido is as stunning as it is fun. While the 50m pool (which was once offered as an Olympic training facility) is great for serious swimmers, families will love the children’s pool with slides.

Mid-swim views don’t get much better than the surrounding countryside of Ilkley Pool and Lido in Yorkshire. Set against rolling Yorkshire hills, it’s not surprising this spot has been named as one of the best pools in the north of England.

Fancy spotting a castle while you do your front crawl? Arundel Lido, based in the middle of South Downs National Park, is where to head. Not only is it heated, you can see stunning views of Arundel Castle in the background.

Droitwich Spa Lido is one of the last remaining inland saltwater pools, making it Worcestershire’s finest outdoor pool. As well as the 40m swimming pool, there’s a wet play area for little ones and a sun terrace for the adults.

9. Shap Swimming Pool – Cumbria

At over 900 feet above sea level, Shap Swimming Pool in Cumbria is the highest outdoor Lido in England. Although it’s small, there’s a separate paddling pool for children and it’s heated, meaning it’s a great day out even on naff weather days.

Chagford Swimming Pool in Devon is heated by solar panels and is river-fed, using as much natural water as possible to minimise the use of chlorine. Look around you and you’ll see views for miles as it’s set on the banks of Teign.
