There could be a third Mamma Mia film on the way

When the first Mamma Mia! film landed on our screens in 2008, musical enthusiasts, ABBA fans and lovers of all things Meryl Streep were united in pure cheesy joy. The follow-up film, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again was released 10 years later. Now, there’s some more Super Trooper news. Don’t get too excited dancing queens, but there might be another instalment of the musical comedy coming soon.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, producer of the original Mamma Mia! stage production Judy Craymer revealed there could be a third film one day.

‘I was meant to have been getting on with that [planning a third film], in my head, during these months. But then I got hit with Covid fog,’ she said. ‘I think one day there will be another film, because there’s meant to be a trilogy, you see.’

A Mamma Mia 3? Gimme, gimme, gimme!

‘I know Universal would like me to do it,’ Judy added. She went on to explain how she would like to use the four new ABBA songs that Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus have written. These new songs were meant to feature in a virtual concert they planned with fellow band members Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad.

But what about the cast? Last year, Cher announced a biopic of her life is in production with Mammia Mia‘s own Judy Craymer, so the two are still working closely together.

Christine Baranski, who plays Tanya in the films, is also keen for a reunion. The actor recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly in regards to her leading role in new period drama The Gilded Age, but of course the topic of Mamma Mia 3 came up.

‘If we could go back and have the same amount of good fun and be on a Greek island together filming and dining together at night at some wonderful trattoria or taverna, I don’t think anybody would give you an argument,’ she said.

Although, Christine admitted it would be difficult to make it happen: ‘It’s a nightmare to get that sort of a cast together… I always think wouldn’t it be fun just to get back together on that Greek island and maybe film all of us having dinner and telling the stories and singing all ABBA songs? And then just have it filmed as a great night out.’

We would love that!

Amanda Seyfried, who plays Sophie in the franchise, also chatted to Collider about the possibility of a third film. ‘I wish there was a Mamma Mia 3, but I’ll tell you what – I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, and I hope I’m wrong again – I don’t think there are enough ABBA songs to make a third movie. Because we’d have to use ‘Super Trooper’ again and we’d have to use ‘Mamma Mia’ again and have to use them in a different way.’
