Female-led films have proven to be the key to box office success this year, with the likes of Lady Bird, I, Tonya, Shape of Water, and Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri smashing targets and receiving endless accolades.
Luckily, 2019 is already set to be yet another Hollywood win for women with a fresh batch of films with women both in front of and behind the camera hitting the big screen.
One upcoming release we’re particularly excited about is the highly anticipated film adaptation of Louis May Alcott’s classic novel, Little Women – especially because it is being both written and directed by none other than Greta Gerwig.
Following the success of her directorial debut, Lady Bird, Gerwig – whose work earned five Oscar nominations including Best Director – has set her sights on transforming Alcott’s beloved classic into a feminist blockbuster and if her track record is anything to go by, it’s bound to receive critical acclaim, not least because of its star studded cast.
Want to know more? Of course you do. So here’s what we know about Little Women the movie so far…
What is the plot of Little Women?
Following the plot of Alcott’s novel, Little Women the lives of four sisters – Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March, chronicling their lives from childhood to womanhood. Throughout the years, they face everything from blossoming relationships and ambitions but always manage to maintain their unbreakable bond. As the novel was first published in 1869, the film will no doubt be a modern retelling with a firm 21st century feminist stamp.
Who will star in Little Women?
Earlier this month, Emma Watson confirmed the key cast members (including herself) by sharing a photo of them all alongside Gerwig on Instagram. The stars include Saoirse Ronan who will play, Jo, Florence Pugh as Amy, and Eliza Scanlen who takes the role of Beth.
Teen heartthrob Timothée Chalamet was also in the photo and will star as Theodore ‘Laurie’ Laurence.
But if you thought those were the only big names, think again. The one and only Meryl Streep has been signed up to play Aunt March, while her Big Little Lies co-star Lauren Dern will be the family’s matriarch, Marmee March and James Norton takes the role of John Brooke.
It has also been reported that Bob Odenkirk and Chris Copper will appear in the upcoming film, though their roles have yet to be announced.
When will it be released?
While there has been no official announcement for the film’s release, it is set to hit US cinemas on 25th December 2019, according to IMDb. But fear not, it will arrive in the UK shortly after on Friday 17 January 2020.
