Ah, Legally Blonde. It was the film that introduced the world to the ‘bend and snap’, and made us all want to suddenly take up a law degree. Because if Elle Woods could do it, so could we.
News of a third Legally Blonde film first appeared way back in 2018. Reese Witherspoon, who plays Elle Woods, shared a video of herself floating across a pool just like her character, with the words, ‘It’s true… #LegallyBlonde3’.

Production company MGM Studios also revealed the film would be coming to screens on Valentine’s Day in 2020. But we all know what happened in 2020… enter: Covid.
The film was then pushed back to be released in May 2020, but of course, we were still in the peak of the pandemic at the time.

So when is the film coming out? This is everything we know about it so far…
Who stars in Legally Blonde 3?
It wouldn’t be Legally Blonde without Reese Witherspoon, so thank goodness she will be reprising her role as Elle Woods, 21 years after she first emerged as the perfectly pink lawyer-to-be.
But what of Elle’s husband, Emmett? Luke Wilson, who played him, said he would ‘love’ to be a part of the new film. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight in May 2020, Luke said: ‘I have not talked to Reese about it, but yeah, I always kind of hear rumours here and there. Never anything official about them doing another Legally Blonde, but I’d love to do another one. I mean, just that character Reese played was so funny at the time and that has kind of become this iconic character now.’
In an interview from 2019 with the Hollywood Reporter, Reese Witherspoon said Legally Blonde 3 would be ‘full of fun, full of fashion and full of awesome feminist ideas’ as well as ‘returning cast members’. She finished: ‘it will be the return of Jennifer Coolidge which is great.’ Jennifer played Elle’s good friend Paulette Bonafonté, so fingers crossed for a return of their friendship, too.
What’s the plot?
In 2020, Deadline reported that Mindy Kaling (of The Office and The Mindy Project fame), and Dan Goor would be writing the script for the film. So at least we can expect big laughs. The original producers, Marc Platt and Adam Siegel, are also working on it.
Variety has since reported the script is complete, but we still don’t know who the director is. We also don’t know if production has started on the film, but we do know Reese Witherspoon is joining the crew as a producer. Production company Hello Sunshine is responsible for massive TV hits such as Big Little Lies and Little Fires Everywhere.
As for what this film holds for Elle, Emmett and the rest of the original cast, we’ll have to wait and see.
When’s it out?
Last year, Variety reported Legally Blonde 3 was set to hit screens on 20 May 2022, but that date has been delayed once again according to script writer Mindy Kaling. It turns out the movie has actually yet to begin filming!

Speaking to Time, she explained she’s taking her time to write the script because she wants to do justice to the beloved comedy.
‘We don’t want to be responsible for ruining what’s basically Reese’s Avengers franchise,’ she said.
Mindy also shared some of the questions she’s hoping to answer with the next chapter of Legally Blonde. ‘What is Elle Woods like at 42?’ she said. ‘Does she end up becoming all the things she wanted? How does that personality manifest in a grown woman? Has she become more cynical? Her brightness and her cheerfulness really worked when she was 22, but how has life changed her perspective on things?’
She continued: ‘We’re not afraid of the character in this world, and we don’t feel we have to apologise for her. As a fan, I didn’t want to watch her be cancelled or become a Karen. So the character is just fun. That’s what’s been interesting and challenging – and why it’s taking us such a long time to write.’
