Why you should always keep your shoes on when you’re flying

We’ve all been guilty of kicking our shoes off to get comfortable on a flight, especially when flying long-haul. And while it has always been acceptable (some airlines even provide you with in-flight socks or slippers to wear during long journeys), taking your shoes off might not actually be a good idea after all.

An experienced flight attendant has revealed why you should always keep your shoes on when flying in a Quora thread about in-flight etiquette. One user on the forum questioned why passengers are asked to wear their shoes during takeoff, which is a very valid question considering the rule is applied on every flight.

The flight attendant, a woman named Tony Luna, then answered the user’s query, explaining: ‘Besides stinking up the whole cabin, footwear is essential during an airplane emergency, even though it is not part of the flight safety information.’

She continued: ‘During an emergency, all sorts of debris and unpleasant ground surfaces will block your way towards the exit, as well as outside the aircraft. If your feet isn’t properly covered, you’ll have a hard time making your way to safety.’

Another Quora user also chimed in on the subject, adding: ‘The acceleration (and deceleration on landing) tends to slide away from you and makes it tough when you need them afterwards. Plus, the stink of your feet are unacceptable to people around you.’

Most of the other comments on the forum seemed to agree, with ‘shoes’ and ‘socks’ constantly coming up as essential items to wear on a flight.

So there you have it. Not only can walking around on a plane without your shoes cause hygiene issues (no one likes smelly feet), but it is also essential to have your feet covered for safety reasons. Not to mention the fact that it can get pretty chilly on a flight.
