Hotel review: Velassaru, The Maldives

The Maldives, a collection of coral islands in the Indian Ocean, south-west of Sri Lanka, offer promises of crystalline blue waters, endless white sand beaches and an escape from the noisy hustle of the world.

Velassaru, a luxury resort featuring five restaurants, an overwater spa and a marine centre, serves up all that is promised and more, delivering an enchanting island experience only a 25-minute boat ride from Male Airport. World-class diving and snorkeling are on offer here, as well as privacy and peace, and even at full capacity crowded beaches are a world away at this secluded resort.

Rooms and facilities

Accommodation on the island comprises of a variety of self-contained rooms or suites, situated either on land or over the water. The island is small so even the more “inland” rooms are seconds from the sea. Beach villas have doors directly out to the beach, and water villas have direct access to the sea, some even have private infinity pools.

I stayed in a beach villa, nestled amongst towering palms and greenery.  Rooms are spacious with high ceilings and large beds, and feature a mini bar, wine fridge and coffee machine. Sustainably-sourced still water bottles are replenished daily. There is a private terrace overlooking the ocean, and private loungers are attached to each room.

My absolute favourite feature of these rooms is the magnificently oversized semi-outdoor (but completely private) bathroom.  Featuring both a large bath and indoor shower, the coup-de-grace for me was the outside shower. Surrounded by tropical plants and eight-foot walls I spent a disproportionate amount of time here, soothed by the cascading waterfall shower as I gazed at blue or starry skies above.

Food and drink

The resort features five restaurants and two bars with a broad choice of cuisines on offer, including Asian-inspired and Mediterranean options. Room options include breakfast only, half board and full board.

For the ultimate experience I would recommend the Velassaru indulgence package – a food and drink upgrade package that allows you to dine at any of the islands five restaurants and includes a wide variety of alcoholic beverages and soft drinks.  Upgrading to this package has the added benefit of daily complimentary access to ocean kayaks and the opportunity to burn off excesses!

Hotel highlights

The main things on offer here are soft white sands, perfect weather, and impossibly beautiful sunsets; but for those seeking more than long days lounging by the sea there is also a luxury full-service spa, a variety of water sports and a coral reef teeming with fish but a short paddle from the beach.  All guests are offered complimentary snorkel gear, complimentary boat cruises and tri-weekly sunset yoga sessions on the beach (an absolute dream).

What to do nearby

Velassaru delivers on every promise when it comes to the Maldives.  Its motto could be “no filter” as wherever you look in any direction you will find picture perfect scenery, and matchless hues of blue.  It’s not a place where you are required (or will feel inclined to) “do” anything.  Simply being here is enough to achieve a state of absolute bliss.
