H&M has often led the way in eco-conscious high street fashion, and the brand’s latest Conscious Exclusive collection for A/W 20 might just be the Swedish store’s most sustainable offering yet.
For this year’s autumn winter output, H&M has focused on creating ‘beauty from waste’ – which has resulted in dresses and more made from sustainably sourced wood pulp, oilseed hemp crop waste and grape skins that are the by-product of the winemaking process.
‘For A/W20, we really wanted to be trailblazers – pushing the limits of creativity and sustainable fashion – by focusing on waste,’ says Ann-Sofie Johansson, creative advisor at H&M. ‘As a result, the pieces in this collection are crafted from truly amazing materials produced from waste. Working with this kind of transformation and being able to speak to our customers through beauty, we hope that waste can be part of the future of sustainable fashion.’
And the clothes themselves are just as exquisite as the fabric innovations. Hero pieces in the 38-piece collection (8 of which are menswear, the rest womenswear) include a gorgeous grass-green tulle maxi dress, a joyful yellow floral jacquard that finds itself reworked as a shirt, trousers and stunning off-the-shoulder gown and a super tactile turquoise fabric flower-covered mini dress.
If you’re wondering how much wear you’ll get out of these stunning party wear pieces (although we suggest you do as we are and add them to your wardrobe to wear next year), there’s also plenty of wearable everyday pieces, too: think blazers, flowy shirts, tailored trousers, T-shirts and accessories in the form of sunglasses and jewellery.
There’s also a genius pair of multifunctional boots that transform into mules by way of a removable sock (these are made from VEGEA™, a vegan leather partly made from wine by-products) – as a two-in-one item the eco-credentials of these shoes are two-fold.
While the price points are a bit higher than you might expect to find at H&M, there are some affordable entry points to the collection: accessories start at £19.99.
