Yes, we know we haven’t even had Halloween yet, but Christmas is just around the corner, believe it or not. In our book, it’s never too early to start getting ahead on your Christmas preparations and, seeing as lots of us missed out on a big shindig last year, we’re throwing everything we can at Christmas 2021.
With that, Etsy has revealed it’s predictions for the biggest Christmas 2021 trends, and they cover everything from how we’ll be setting the table to what we’ll be wearing to the gifts we’ll be giving (and hopefully receiving!). So let’s get right into them…
Etsy’s Christmas 2021 trends
Expanded colour palette
Traditionally, a festive colour palette would consist of red, green and gold, but lately there has been a shift towards more non-conventional colour palettes at Christmas time. For 2021, Etsy is predicting this trend to go even further as we celebrate playful decoration and self-expression more. The site has seen a 228 per cent increase in searches for custom and personalised neon signs, a 47 per cent increase in searches for colourful, pastel and neon holiday items and a 41 per cent increase in searches for jewel tone items. The brighter, the better, we say!
Bold, vintage brooches
Whether it’s beaded, embroidered, pearl-studded or floral-inspired, stick a vintage brooch on this Christmas and you’ll be right on trend. Vintage brooches are making a major resurgence of late – Etsy has seen a 168 per cent increase in searches for vintage or antique brooches – no doubt fueled by the sustainability trend.
Tablescaping is a trend that was fuelled by lockdown, as we ate and cooked at home a lot more. As such, showstopping Christmas tables are set to go stellar this year – Etsy has seen searches for place settings shoot up 72 per cent, tablescape decor up 27 per cent and napkin rings up 19 per cent. Many Etsy sellers are now making it easier than ever to create an elevated, social media-worthy dinner table with tablescaping kits that provide everything you need, such as candlesticks, napkins, name cards and more.
Checkerboard prints have been trending ever since the release of The Queen’s Gambit, and there’s no reason the trend will skip out Christmas, either. Etsy has seen a 37 per cent rise in searches for checkerboard print, and as such the versatile graphic print is popping up on everything, from fashion and decor to gift wrap.
Unsurprisingly, as a lot of us turned to nature for a sense of calm and escape this year (with many of us staycationing in the British countryside), natural influences are cropping up in Christmas decor. Dried floral wreaths are up 68 per cent, wooden holiday items are up 30 per cent, but the biggest interpretation of the trend (and also the most unexpected) is mushroom decor, which is up a huge 366 per cent. Coastal elements, like driftwood, seashells and mountainscape motifs, are also predicted to be big this season.
Etsy has seen that shoppers are looking for ways to escape away from screens, whether that means going outside or doing a practical activity. There’s been a 1,056 per cent increase in searches for easy DIY kits, a 131 per cent increase in searched for chequers and chessboards, a 68 per cent rise in searches for outdoor blankets, searches for holiday-themed baking items are up 28 per cent and playing cards by 21 per cent.
