More than a decade after its iconic facial cleansing brushes first hit the market, Clarisonic is shutting down, confirming in a post on its social media accounts that it will cease operations at the end of September.
‘After more than a decade of gamechanging innovation and industry-leading technology, the Clarisonic brand will be shutting down on 30 September 2020,’ the statement reads. ‘We want to thank all of our loyal customers, dermatologies and retail partners who have helped put this brand on the map. It has been our absolute pleasure to serve you all these years.’
Clarisonic was created in 2001, the brainchild Dr Robb Akridge and David Giuliani, who previously invented the Sonicare Electric Toothbrush, and cleverly translated similar principles into skincare.
It was sold to L’Oreal in 2011, and there are now several different brushes in the range, from the ever-popular Mia and Mia 2 to the Alpha Fit, as well as dozens of interchangeable brush heads to suit a range of skin types. In fact, more than 10 million of the devices have sold worldwide.
But if you’ve incorporated them into your routine, this year now marks the last chance to get your hands on them before the closure – an announcement that’s come as a major shock and disappointment to fans. ‘I’ve owned Clarisonic brushes since 2007 and I don’t know how I’ll live without it when I run out of brush heads,’ said one on the Clarisonic Instagram account, while another wrote: ‘I’ve purchased enough head to last me till my device inevitably dies. And I’m considering buying a backup device. This is so devastating ? why you guys?!? WHY?!???’
In the US, customers are also being encouraged to take advantage of a major Clarisonic sale, with 50 per cent of everything at its authorised retailers, including Amazon and Sephora. But this isn’t the case for the UK – so will we see any discounts on offer?
Laurence Newman, CEO of beauty device experts Current Body, the official retail partner to Clarisonic in the UK, tells you.co.uk: ‘In an ever-changing world, Clarisonic owners L’Oréal are moving in a different direction but we are not, and remain very much at the forefront of all home use beauty technologies including facial cleansing solutions.
‘We have been working hard in the background with our long-term partners at L’Oréal to ensure you have all the brush heads and cleansers you will need to support your existing device for a significant period of time, along with the expertise and knowledge to help you get the best results.’
Current Body will be ‘running offers for up to 40 per cent off, and cost-saving bundle packages of brush heads’ in the coming days – but these aren’t live as of yet.
‘As the only authorised seller remaining in Europe these offers will ensure customers are able to secure a great deal (while stocks last),’ he adds. ‘Current Body have secured all remaining European stock, and will be supporting customers with any queries they may have on what this means for their purchase/warranty.’
