It’s no secret that we Brits love a bit of winter sun. In fact, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported that UK residents made 3.9 million visits abroad in December 2017, while a YouGov survey from 2016 revealed that a quarter of Brits have spent Christmas in a foreign country. So if you fancy doing just that, you may want to take notes because Skyscanner has just revealed the best time to book a winter holiday to get the most reasonable rates.

After analysing its flight booking data from last year – flying from 16 December 2017 to 31 December 2017 and returning between 26 December and 7 January – the popular travel sight concluded that the cheapest time to book flights is 13 weeks ahead of travel.

‘Looking at our flight data we can see that the best time to book flights for Christmas tends to be 13 weeks in advance… which could save travellers up to 29%,’ said Lisa Tyndall, the senior growth manager at Skyscanner.

However despite this, most people tend to book their Christmas travels last minute, with with 29% of holidaymakers in 2017 booking in November.

‘Christmas Day has long been believed to be the cheapest day over the festive period [to fly], however, our data is showing the reverse to be true and it is in fact the most expensive day,’ Tyndall added.

According to Skyscanner’s data, travelling on 25 December is 24% more expensive than the average price for flights from the UK to all destinations between 16 – 31 December – or at least it was last year.  On the other hand, the cheapest day to travel was found to be Christmas Eve, with a 19% saving expected compared to the following day.

So there you have it. If you’re planing on spending Christmas abroad this year, you might want to book it now…
