If Slough is the place you call home then you’re in for some good news. The Berkshire town, famous for being the setting of Rocky Gervais’ hit sitcom, The Office, has been voted the best place to work in the UK for a second year running.
The town, located west of Greater London, topped a list compiled by job and recruiting site Glassdoor, who investigated the best parts of the UK to work in. They did this by looking into three factors including cost of living, hiring opportunity and job satisfaction.
Their research showed that in 2018 alone, there were 22,131 job openings in Slough with an average base salary of £29,500 while job satisfaction was ranked at 3.4 (which is considered about the average for the whole of the UK). And to top things off, the average home value currently sits at £391,218.
‘Slough is now firmly established as one of the best areas in the UK to work, because of its consistently high employee satisfaction and job opportunities relative to its population. It is also home to a huge range of employers. With plans now agreed for Heathrow’s third runway and the new Crossrail in 2019, its growth potential is very positive,’ said Amanda Stansell, Glassdoor’s Economic Research Analyst.
‘While several of the towns and cities highlighted in this report may be surprising, many are experiencing growing local economies, complete with a healthy dose of new job prospects and strong home affordability.’
As well as being cost-friendly, offering frequent job opportunities, solid salaries and affordable housing, Slough is also home to the Mars bar. So we don’t know about you, but we’re pretty sold. In fact, we reckon John Betjeman would eat his words about the town after hearing this.
Glassdoor’s annual research project crowned Gloucester the second best place to work, while Cambridge ranked in at third place followed by Reading and Guildford which were fourth and fifth respectively.
