13 of the best cardigans to tap into this season’s biggest trend

Of all the wardrobe staples we’d have expected to take centre stage in recent years, cardigans would be languishing at the bottom of the list, buried deep under unflattering connotations of frumpiness and ‘librarian chic’. But you can colour us corrected, because the cosy knit has fast become the It girl’s layer of choice, and it looks set to stay in favour for autumn/winter 2020 and beyond.

However, the cardigan of today is not just any old cardigan – it comes in a multitude of guises. There are those iterations with the volume turned down, with styling sleeker and chicer than ever – part preppy throwback to the 90s (think Alicia Silverstone in Clueless, or Cameron Diaz in My Best Friend’s Wedding), part effortless off-duty cool (à la Katie Holmes’s cashmere bradigan). Then there are those with the volume turned right up, with all the frills, embroidery and embellishment you can throw at it. Thus the appeal of the cardigan is wide-spread, which is why the high-street rails are currently full to bursting.

‘They’re just so easy to wear and easy to style. You don’t really need to think about your outfit, you just wear the cardigan and a pair of high-waisted jeans and you’re good to go,’ explains Morgane Sezalory, founder of Sézane, whose £90 Barry design has racked up waiting lists of thousands in the past. ‘It is a vintage trend and it is something really Parisian to wear, too.’

So, ready to snuggle up?

This week is a busy’un. A brief trip in to London for @rocknrosegirls meetings. Managed to slot in meeting @emjorealdavies and @noughticulture IRL, too! Dropped Mabel off for an x-ray (who knew dog x-rays required a general anaesthetic?!) then spent the day PASSED MYSELF but she is totally fine. Just soft tissue damage and a really funny x-ray – swipe if you want a lol. Think it’s the ears 😂 Tomorrow I’m off to Glasgow for the very first time (send me your Glasgow recommendations!) with @jesslathan and @beautyworksbyamy for fun with @kosloveski and @kate.lavie! Getting my yearly quota of incred ladies all in one week 👭👭👭 but first – a cuppa, a snuggle with said pup and that episode of GOT I’ve been trying to catch all week ✔️ • Cardi and jeans – @nextofficial (gifted)

Day 1 of 2020 was a complete write-off thanks to my hangover (your thirties means you’re slow to bounce back 🥴) but I thought I’d do a reintroduction! ⁣ ⁣ Hello there! 👋🏾 I’m Nicole! Originally from the Northern Virginia suburbs, but moved from the U.S. to London nine years ago to study. ⁣ ⁣ I’m now making a home in Croydon with my husband that I’m hoping to share more of this year!⁣ ⁣ I’m a big empath, a sensitive soul and will cry at pretty much EVERYTHING. A cute hedgehog will have me weep! ⁣ ⁣ I used to be a journalist, but the hours and the regurgitation of stories really wore me down. I transitioned into influencer marketing and now freelance as a talent strategist/talent producer. ⁣ ⁣ I’m also a fashion blogger (who continues to struggle with writer’s block!) and I share my outfits from a size 16 perspective.⁣ ⁣ I’m half-Filipino and half-Ghanaian, which has largely shaped who I am as a person: a mixed-race, black woman. ⁣ ⁣ It’s divine to meet you! I am so excited for a fresh start in this New Year, are you? Tell me a little about you down below! 😘 #noteworthystyle ⁣ ⁣ [Jumper kindly gifted from @sezane.]⁣ ⁣ 📸: @alexgracejonesphotos
