Of all the wardrobe staples we’d have expected to take centre stage in recent years, cardigans would be languishing at the bottom of the list, buried deep under unflattering connotations of frumpiness and ‘librarian chic’. But you can colour us corrected, because the cosy knit has fast become the It girl’s layer of choice, and it looks set to stay in favour for autumn/winter 2020 and beyond.
However, the cardigan of today is not just any old cardigan – it comes in a multitude of guises. There are those iterations with the volume turned down, with styling sleeker and chicer than ever – part preppy throwback to the 90s (think Alicia Silverstone in Clueless, or Cameron Diaz in My Best Friend’s Wedding), part effortless off-duty cool (à la Katie Holmes’s cashmere bradigan). Then there are those with the volume turned right up, with all the frills, embroidery and embellishment you can throw at it. Thus the appeal of the cardigan is wide-spread, which is why the high-street rails are currently full to bursting.
‘They’re just so easy to wear and easy to style. You don’t really need to think about your outfit, you just wear the cardigan and a pair of high-waisted jeans and you’re good to go,’ explains Morgane Sezalory, founder of Sézane, whose £90 Barry design has racked up waiting lists of thousands in the past. ‘It is a vintage trend and it is something really Parisian to wear, too.’
So, ready to snuggle up?
