Zandra Rhodes is known for her bold, unapologetic approach to style and she’s an icon in her own right. So it may come as little surprise to hear that Rhodes has collaborated with high street favourite Free People to create an 8-piece capsule collection full of glorious ‘70s inspired pieces for all seasons.
The Zandra Rhodes x Free People collaboration came about after Free People chief creative director Ana Hartl visited Rhodes at her studio to rummage through her archives. The pair together found four prints they wanted to work with to form a small collection for the modern Free People customer.
Rhodes — who dressed everybody from Princess Diana to Freddie Mercury in the ‘70s and ‘80s — built pieces around her star design print from the ‘60s, a shell print from the ‘70s, and her famous Mexican Turnaround print. The line comprises floaty, standout dresses perfect for wedding season, as well as beachy two pieces juxtaposed with a tough black leather jacket.
Speaking of the collaboration, Rhodes said: ‘It makes me excited to be able to reach more people through this collaboration with Free People. As a luxury designer, it is often hard to be accessible to the many. Collaborating with a brand that is affordable but still maintains high quality is a real goal for me. I also love the bohemian aesthetic that Free People have, it really aligns with and speaks to the Zandra Rhodes wearer.’
‘Zandra is a legend and her designs are what Free People designers dream of,’ added Hartl. ‘Her work embodies an electrified version of the beauty, whimsy and spirit that we love – her passion of handcraft in her print artwork is so closely matched with our creative values and aesthetic. To be able to combine her prints with our shapes was a dream come true.’
