Ever dreamed of ditching the stresses of your everyday life and escaping to the country – with your own manor house to reside in, perhaps? Well, those dreams could actually become a reality, as there’s a Georgian mansion being raffled off for the price of just £2.50 per ticket.
Melling Hall, a beautiful six-bedroom property located in the Lancashire village of the same name, is being sold off as its owners Julie and Guy Vass have decided to downsize after 18 years living in and restoring the home. But rather than put the Grade II listed building on the market, the couple have decided to run a prize draw to raise money for St John’s Hospice in Lancaster and NHS Charities Together.
‘Three years ago our next door neighbour awarded his house as the prize in a similar competition and we were very impressed by the whole concept,’ they explain of the idea. ‘It seemed a brilliant idea: sell your house, raise money for charity and change someone’s life forever!’
‘Julie has been as a key worker for the NHS for most of her working life, and has continued to work throughout the Covid-19 outbreak, so we wanted to support her colleagues, near and far, during these difficult times. Also, our nearest Hospice has suffered heavily in terms of falling donations during the pandemic and we wanted to make up some of their lost revenue.’
‘The house is just a fantastic place to live. It gives you everything you could want in a house – great style, tons of space and lots of fun,’ Julie, who works as the a manager of a local GP practice, told Metro. ‘Although obviously not a small house, the rooms are so well proportioned that they are always warm and welcoming and just great spaces to be in.’
Melling Hall, which is estimated to be worth around £900,000, boasts views over a beautiful river valley, as well as proximity to Kirkby Lonsdale – recently named by the Sunday Times as the best place to live in the Northwest of England – as well as the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks.
All fitted carpets, curtains, light fittings and chandeliers throughout the house will be included for the lucky winner, together with much of the furniture visible in the photographs, including the stunning Broadwood grand piano in the sitting room.
