Waitrose to start selling tearless onions

In news that is, quite frankly, music to our eyes (does that work?), Waitrose has announced that it plans to start selling tear-free onions this month.

That’s right – chopping onions will no longer have to involve streaming eyes, rivers of mascara down your face or desperately flailing round to find the nearest bit of kitchen roll through barely-opened lids. Praise be.

According to Waitrose, ‘Sunions are the first tearless and sweet onion variety, perfect for those with sensitive eyes as well as cooking in the kitchen with children.  The mild flavour makes them perfect for use in cooking while they can also be used raw in a salad.’

The tear-free onions are great news at a time of year when we are constantly chopping onions for various warming dishes, whether that’s garlic rice with caramelised onions and mushrooms, French onion soup or a delicious shepherd’s pie.

Paul Bidwell, Onion Buyer at Waitrose comments: ‘We understand how a-peeling tearless onions are to our customers which is why we’re delighted to launch Sunions in selected stores and via Waitrose.com from 18th January.  Ideal for taking the tears out of the kitchen, the sweetness of this type of onion lends itself perfectly to a variety of dishes, from salads to hot meals.’

Other foods that Waitrose thinks will be popular this year were featured in its foods trend report, released in October. The brand predicted that potato milk would hit the shelves alongside oat, soy and almond as a new dairy-alternative, and that premium pre-batched cocktails would also be a hit. The revival of breakfast, more environmentally-driven food choices and the ingredient umami were also cited as being big for 2022.
