As international travel and therefore holidaying abroad still remain largely uncertain this year, we’re looking forward to staycationing our way around the UK instead this summer. But where to go? The UK is home to some of the most luscious countryside, quaint seaside towns and bustling cities, so deciding on the best location for your domestic holiday is no mean feat.
Thankfully, Perfect Stays has made that decision a little easier for you by finding the top five UK coastal locations. As with many things in life these days (from beauty hacks to baking tips to restaurant recommendations), they turned to TikTok to gather their data. To determine the UK’s top coastal destination, they analysed a range of coastal locations on the social media platform, deeming which is the most popular by the number of views on the location’s hashtag.
While it seems everyone and their dog is flocking to Cornwall this summer, you may be surprised to find out that the surfing hotspot did not take the number one spot as the UK’s top coastal destination.
In fact, Devon’s Dartmouth holds that esteemed title, with a grand total of 47.4 million hashtag views. The ancient market town located on the stunning River Dart estuary is peppered with secluded coves, long expanses of golden sands (as well as the Blue Flag-winning Blackpool Sands), a quaint harbour, award-winning restaurants and a vibrant town centre steeped in history.
St Ives in Cornwall came second – it was named a top emerging destination by Tripadvisor earlier this year, after all – but not far off with 47.1 million hashtag views. The third spot goes back to Devon with the popular resort town of Salcombe, then Merseyside’s Crosby followed by the colourfully picturesque Tobermory on Scotland’s Isle of Mull.
Top five British coastal locations according to TikTok:
- Dartmouth – 47.4 million hashtag views
- St Ives – 47.1 million hashtag views
- Salcombe – 41.3 million hashtag views
- Crosby – 25.5 million hashtag views
- Tobermory – 15.1 million hashtag views
Josh Wildeman, Marketing Manager of Perfect Stays commented: ‘2021 has become the year of the staycation and it’s unsurprising to see the UK public looking for holiday inspiration after being cooped up for over a year.
‘It’s great to see so much interest in visiting the South West. With fantastic scenery, great food and an abundance of activities and tourist hotspots for everyone of all ages, you’ll never be bored, but make sure to book up far in advance.’
