While many of us will be making lists of resolutions for the new year, others may be considering where they would like to travel to in 2019. Luckily for us, 101holidays.co.uk has put together a useful list of top destinations recommended by revered travel journalists and editors.
The list, which asks a number of travel experts (including top journalists from titles such as Lonely Planet, The Telegraph and The Sunday Times) to name where they will be going on holiday this year, is the perfect ‘where’s where’ of 2019 – and its results may surprise you.
In the top spot is the USA, which was selected by 29 of the 85 journalists questioned. This may be surprising to some, particularly when considering the controversy surrounding President Donald Trump as of late. However it seems the wealth of cool cities, beautiful national parks and endless foodie opportunities the country has to offer remains irresistible.
“It may be surprising to see the USA dominate the poll, but it’s a country of great beauty and diversity where British visitors continue to receive a warm welcome,” explains Mark Hodson, editor of 101 Holidays.
‘Several journalists told us they are not fans of Trump but would not let his presidency deter them from visiting.’
In second place (again, perhaps surprisingly) is the UK. That’s right; several British journalists are opting to forgo the long-haul flights in favour of a staycation in good old Blighty. Of the 14 journalists who chose the UK, four are looking to visit Scotland, two to Wales and one each to Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands.
Next up was Japan, which came third. With its bustling cities, mesmerising bamboo forests and fresh food, it’s easy to see why the country sits so highly on the list.
The remainder of the top ten list features several European countries, as well as destinations much further away including Australia.
Take a look at the top ten (along with the number of visits planned in brackets):
