This common hack for sleeping in a heatwave doesn’t actually work

Staying cool and comfortable during a heatwave is no mean feat, particularly in the UK, where we’re so much less equipped than other regions. Due to the fact we rarely experience such scorching heat, the majority of us will not have access to air conditioning units, and during times such as these, even buying an electrical fan can seem impossible.

So what can you actually do to keep yourself cool, particularly at night? There’s keeping more windows open, dampening your wrists, hands and feet before bedtime with icy water, and of course, keeping on a fan overnight, if you are lucky enough to have access to one. 

But there’s one nighttime hack that doesn’t actually work as well as we might think it does, according to The Sleep Geek James Wilson. Wilson explains that putting pjs, pillow cases, or other bed clothes in the freezer before bed is actually incredibly counter-productive when it comes to keeping your body temperature down on a hot night. 

It may seem like a good idea in theory, particularly initially when it does feel as if it’s cooling you down, but as things melt and more moisture is released, this will actually make you feel hotter. Frustrating, we know. 

‘When hot weather comes around there are some tips given out that may sound like they would work when actually they really really don’t,’ the expert told The Mirror. 

‘An example of this may be put your bedding/pyjamas in the fridge or freezer or to wear wet socks to bed, but they both have the same problem.’

‘These approaches will add more moisture to your sleep environment and that moisture will heat up during the night. This means that although it may cool you down as you go to bed during the night this moisture will heat up and is likely to wake you as you come out of your sleep cycle.’

Instead, Wilson suggests taking a cool shower or bath before you go to bed, to try and bring your body temperature down. And if all else fails, just try to remember this won’t last much longer (or so we hope!).
