The Lightbox: What we’re talking about at YOU this week

Welcome to The Lightbox, your weekly roundup of what we’re talking about at YOU by our very own Editorial Assistant, Charlotte Vossen. This week, we’re reading Kevin Kwan’s Sex and Vanity, buying tickets for the Alice in Wonderland exhibition at the V&A and drinking homemade cold brew.

Read: Sex and Vanity by Kevin Kwan

Cornerstone

Sex and Vanity, another decadent romance novel by Crazy Rich Asians author Kevin Kwan just got released in paperback and it’s the perfect summer read. Set against the backdrop of Capri, Lucie Tang Churchill meets Hong Kong surfer boy George Zao at a lavish destination wedding and she’s instantly attracted to him, much to her family’s dismay. Five years later, Lucie is spending a weekend in the Hamptons with her fiancé when George unexpectedly appears, stirring up some suppressed emotions. £8.99, Waterstones

Charlotte Tilbury

It’s a glossy lip balm formulated with hyaluronic acid, passion fruit seed oil and cupuacu seed butter that will leave your lips plumped, nourished and hydrated. Available in ten medium-coverage shades – including everyone’s favourite, Pillow Talk – with a high-shine finish, it’s the perfect tinted lip balm for those no-makeup makeup days. £25, Charlotte Tilbury

Watch: Rebel on Disney+

Disney+

Loosely based on the life of environmental advocate Erin Brockovich – the same one who inspired the 2000 classic starring Julia Roberts – Rebel follows Annie, a blue-collar legal advocate without a law degree who cares desperately about the causes she fights for and the people she loves. With Golden Globe winner Katey Sagal as the lead and Sex and the City actor John Corbett as her husband who’s divorcing her, it’s a shame the series won’t get a second season. Rebel is now streaming on Disney+

Try: Rave Coffee’s Cold Brew

Rave Coffee

Calling all iced coffee drinkers – it’s time to stop pouring hot espresso shots over ice and use cold brew instead. You’ll need water, a bottle or jug with a coffee filter and a cold brew blend, like Rave Coffee’s No 9. For a strong cold brew concentrate, add 100 grams of coffee grounds to 1 litre of water and leave it in the fridge overnight. We enjoy our morning coffee with a splash of oat milk and vanilla syrup, but you can also just dilute the concentrate with water for that classic cold brew taste. £7.50, Rave Coffee

Visit: Alice: Curiouser and Curiouser at the V&A

V&A

After a year-long delay due to the pandemic, the highly anticipated Alice exhibition opened at the V&A and it’s worth scheduling a visit to London for. Taking you on a trip down the rabbit hole, the exhibit explores the origins, adaptations and reinventions of the popular 1865 novel by Lewis Carroll, with over 300 objects across five Alice-themed theatrical sets and a VR experience. Highlights include Carroll’s handwritten manuscript, Royal Opera House stage costumes, fashion from Iris van Herpen and photography from Tim Walker. Alice: Curiouser and Curiouser is at the V&A until 31 December 2021
