The Chic List: My holiday dressing starts at home

Fashion columnist and influencer Joanne Hegarty on how to ace holiday dressing.

Are you away – or, even better, away away – this summer?

With the welcome easing of travel restrictions, this is the question everyone is asking.

Personally, I’m definitely on board for a little away away glamour, after endless months of having our wings clipped.

While the fashion industry is buzzing with renewed excitement for what insiders like to call ‘resort wear’, swimwear sales are expected to surpass pre-pandemic levels to hit over £17 billion this year, according to market researchers Euromonitor.

In simple terms, resort wear translates into the clothes you plan to wear on your holiday, usually made from lighter fibres such as cotton, silk, linen, straw and poplin. If we don’t take too much (always guilty of this), it should be easy to pack.

However, when I’m buying a new piece to take on holiday, I always look for something that works back home, too.

Right now, there’s so much to choose from, with some brands big and small looking to cash in on the new wave of enthusiasm for holiday dressing by hosting preview trunk shows in hotels and stores across Europe.

Matches Fashion has just embarked on a Grand Tour of Italy, stopping off in Rome, Florence, Naples and Ischia to host a series of pop-up shops and posting pictures and videos on Instagram to inspire– and tempt! – customers back home. And, of course, it’s not just selling its collections but that special on-vacation feeling, too.

So what looks or pieces are going to be big this holiday season? Here are my top three…

Pass me the bucket… hat, that is. Yes, the fedora is being replaced this summer by this more simple and versatile style. I found my straw one (above) on the high street in & Other Stories.

When choosing yours, always remember the theory of contrasts. In other words, wear a plain and simple hat if you’re wearing a print dress. Or, if opting for a patterned bucket, make that your statement and team with a wafty white dress while ordering your cocktail at the beach bar.

Make like Jackie O – on the Greek island of Skorpios with Ari! As well as bright dresses and kaftans, her Capri-trouser look is back this summer. Cos, Arket, Cefinn and Joseph already have some excellent pieces – style them out with a summer shirt and a bandeau scarf in your hair.

Ballet flats are having a summer resurgence. A favourite of Audrey Hepburn, they are ideal for city escapes, teamed with airy dresses and favourite denims.

This month sees the launch of Yolke and Penelope Chilvers’s new collab. They are calling it a celebration of the British countryside and mother and daughter relationships – I call it delightful. Dress, £285,

… to wear Sex Wax? That’s the name of this cutout swimsuit by Louisa Ballou. While it’s predicted to be a huge hit this summer, my worry is what happens when the sun hits those hoops. Scorch marks? Swimsuit, £270,

Actress Olivia Wilde may have kept shtoom about her relationship with singer Harry Styles, but accessories speak louder than words. She’s been repeatedly spotted wearing his cross necklace, and fans see it as proof of Harry’s commitment to her.

Don’t want to pay £375 for a Loewe mini basket? This Mango dupe has all the summer feels for a snip. Be quick, it’s selling fast. Basket, £35.99,
