The trailer for Netflix’s The Big Flower Fight has landed and it looks brilliant

For everyone missing their Great British Bake Off fix, we may have just found the perfect show to tide you over until the next season arrives in the autumn.

The Big Flower Fight

Landing on Netflix 18 May, The Big Flower Fight is, in a nutshell, GBBO but with flour swapped for flowers – and we can’t wait to become obsessed with it.

Gardening and flower arranging might not seem like a very high stakes activity or possible of creating the basis of a tense competition show, but then again neither did baking, sewing or pottery until GBBO, The Great British Sewing Bee and The Great Pottery Throw Down came along and won over our hearts (and TV sets).

In fact, it’s the perfect antidote to our current state of affairs – a quintessentially British pastime being turned into a tense competition show is exactly what we all need right now.

Following a similar format to the aforementioned shows, the eight-part series will see ten pairs of amateur floral sculptors, florists and garden designers battle it out to be crowned the champion of horticultural design, through a series of outlandish themed challenges and tasks designed to test their abilities. From large-scale floral instillations to carpentry and landscaping, the contestants will be challenged on their technical skills as well as their creativity. This is flower arranging, but not as we know it.

But as well as looking good, the participants’ designs must be functional, as they will be encouraged to think about using plants that give back to the environment, such as insect-friendly, pollinating species.

Over the course of the series one duo will be named ‘Best in Bloom’ while another will be eliminated each week, Bake Off style, leaving just three teams to battle it out in the final, with the winners being granted the chance to design their own sculpture to go on display at London’s Kew Royal Botanic Gardens.

Comedian Vic Reeves is set to host, best known for Vic Reeves Big Night In and Shooting Stars, alongside Natasia Demetriou, from BBC’s What We Do in The Shadows.

And now, to whet our appetite further, we have a trailer and it has confirmed all our suspicions that this show will be absolutely brilliant.

Well, we never thought flower arranging could be quite so dramatic.

Just as we became a nation hooked on watching others bake (or burn) cakes, our next obsession is soon to be The Big Flower Fight. Dahlias at the ready.
