The best wellness activities in Dubai

Dubai might be a fast-paced city, known for its work hard, play hard culture, but as a visitor it also offers up plenty of opportunities for rest and relaxation. From yoga classes to sound baths, beach clubs to sky pools, I tried out the best wellness activities in Dubai to help you unwind on your next visit.

Admire the views from the Aura Skypool

If you’re afraid of heights this may not be the one for you – set a whopping 200m above the ground on the 50th floor of the Palm Tower, the Aura Skypool will certainly take your breath away. Aura is the world’s first 360-degree infinity pool and offers uninterrupted views over Dubai’s most iconic landmarks. Whether you’re lounging on one of the plush sunbeds or taking a dip, you can enjoy stunning birds-eye view across The Palm, Burj Al Arab, Burj Khalifa and beyond.

Aura also now offers wellness mornings, a 60-minute class tailored to restore the mind, body and soul. Guests can choose between two classes that run bi-weekly on Fridays. ‘Vinyasa in the Sky’, an energizing class to kick-start your day, or if you prefer to take it more slowly – ‘Slow flow in the Sky’, a relaxing session of gentle yoga and stretching. After working up an appetite, the classes are followed by a wholesome breakfast with dishes such as avocado on toast, acai bowl or Asian brunch bowl.

Get lost under the sea with yoga at the aquarium

I’m not usually one for yoga, but wow – this the most spectacular place to give it a go. Held within a secluded area of The Lost Chambers Aquarium, surrounded by 65,000 majestic sea creatures, this hour-long yoga class offers a unique session for all abilities. It’s the perfect opportunity to escape the city buzz and improve on your strength, flexibility and balance – if you’re not distracted by the fish that is.

Switch off with a SEVA sound bath

We arrived at SEVA for our sound bath experience and I wasn’t too sure what to expect: is it going to be a relaxing soak in the bath whilst listening to some spa music? No – but it was equally excellent. A sound bath is essentially a meditation class that aims to guide you into a deep meditate state while waves of soothing, echoing sounds are played by an instructor on a variety of bowls. Some are even placed on your chest and tummy throughout the class which comes at quite a shock when you’re not expecting it, but to feel the vibrations tremor through your body was quite interesting.

Meditating is great for managing stress and improving your overall wellbeing and while meditating might come easily to some, I personally found it hard to switch off and not be fully aware of my surroundings. Saying that, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and left the class feeling refreshed and relaxed.

Create a fragrance at Oo La Labs

Get creative and explore your senses with Oo La Labs 90-minute perfume making workshop. You’ll have the opportunity to create a fragrance that’s completely unique to you, from picking every drop to choosing the name – all with the help from a mixologist. The first part of the class is to smell every scent from three tiers, which consist of bottom, middle and top notes. Then you narrow it down to your favourites. After your nose is fully stimulated comes the fun part; you are allowed two rounds of mixing your chosen scents into a small tube which must consist of 20 drops in total. It does take a few goes to perfect the combination but the mixologist is always there to help.

Once happy with your scent it’s then time to translate the 20 drops into 20ml which will fill your bottle – this needs slight concentration as an extra drop might change the whole formula of your fragrance. Once finished and name chosen, your bottle will be taken away, labelled up and packaged nicely with a card indicating your mixture so if you ever want to reorder, you’ll know the exact concoction.

Relax and unwind at DRIFT Beach

If you’re looking to just lounge by a pool for the day with a sophisticated and chilled atmosphere then DRIFT Beach is the perfect spot. Unlike the other classic party beach clubs in Dubai, this has more of a low-key vibe and is somewhere you can unwind, dine on some of the best foods and enjoy the views. Beyond the stunning pool and Riviera-inspired restaurant, DRIFT offers a private beachfront with views across Dubai’s most iconic skyline.

The Provencal restaurant is beautifully done out, decked in natural driftwood, topaz hues and clean white lines. The décor is effortlessly chic and offers both indoor and outdoor seating. We had breakfast and lunch there and the food was delicious, plus the portions are massive – you won’t be disappointed.

Where to stay in Dubai

Staying at the Park Hyatt was a real treat – set in Dubai Creek, it’s only a stone’s throw away from all the action but has a real secluded feel giving you the best of both worlds. Its picturesque white and blue exterior showcases both Moorish and Mediterranean influences and the surrounding grounds have a tranquil feel.

One of its latest editions, Twiggy by La Cantine, is the ‘place to be’ and I can totally see why. Set up high overlooking the lagoon beach pool, its chic boho decor is stunning in all ways and offers the perfect lunch spot to unwind and dine. The Mediterranean- inspired menu has so much to offer from salads, pasta, seafood and grilled meats, it will have you craving it all. The truffle pizza and profiteroles are a must (worth the calories – I promise).
