This simple hack will tell you when an offer at Tesco is about to expire

As you browse the aisles of your local Tesco, you’ll see endless deals – from multi-buy savings to ongoing discounts to seasonal sales. And now, thanks to a handy hack that’s doing the rounds online, you can tell exactly when then those offers will come to an end.

The trick was revealed on the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK Facebook page, by Rebecca Whitworth-Carr, who said she’d read the secret to saving success elsewhere and wanted to share with the group, which has more than a million members.

‘Not sure if anyone has ever noticed but in Tesco the yellow money off labels have a code under them – this code is actually the date backwards to show how long the offer is on for so you can decide if you need to buy bulk or not,’ she explained.

So in the examples she shared with the chance to save 50p, the code 190806 would actually represent 6 August, meaning that you’d need to move fast to make the most of this offer. However, the Any 2 for £3 offer, with a code of 200228, will run until 28 February 2020, so there’s plenty of time.

‘I had no idea! What a brilliant spot!,’ said one commenter on Rebecca’s post, while another agreed: ‘This is really useful, they did use to print the date on the label in the correct format, then i noticed this code and thought it was rubbish, theyd done away with the date.’

‘I work for tesco and didn’t even know this!!’ a third exclaimed. However, another poster who also works for the store wrote that ‘it’s been around for years.’

‘Before it was dd/mm/yy. But now its yy/mm/dd,’ they added. ‘But dont get caught out, it’s so staff can see when potentially it ends but Tesco can pull the offers anytime. It’s on many supermarket labels. It’s not there for customers as such it’s more for the staff.’

Many others echoed that this doesn’t just apply to Tesco stores – so whatever your supermarket of choice, it’s worth keeping your eyes peeled…
