It’s a mere matter of days since Stacey Dooley and her dance partner Kevin Clifton waltzed away with the coveted glitterball trophy, but attentions have already turned to Strictly Come Dancing 2019 – thanks to a shock revelation from radio DJ Chris Evans.
Speaking during an appearance on BBC One’s The One Show, Chris, 52, said that he had already had conversations with the Strictly team about next year’s series, concluding: ‘I have said yes’.
‘Everyone puts it off and tries and keep it a secret. No, announce now. We’re doing it now,’ he explained, adding that he’d agreed to take part in the competition because ‘my wife would like to go every week’.
The One Show presenter Alex Jones then offered to join his wife in the audience, to which Chris responded: ‘So you and my wife will go every week. You will have a great time while I’ll be petrified backstage, with shaky legs and all that kind of stuff.’
Chris went on to admit that he hasn’t officially signed on the dotted line just yet, but appears to be serious about his declaration, and has ‘had a cup of tea’ with Strictly commissioning editor Jo Wallace to discuss the arrangements.
The news that Chris, who currently hosts The Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2 and will launch his new Virgin breakfast programme in January, is unprecedentedly early, as confirmation of contestants for the show doesn’t usually start until summer.
The reaction from viewers has been mixed so far, with some followers tweeting praise about his role, while others expressed their disappointment.
‘Great ? to see Chris Evans on The One ☝️ Show yesterday ? a true family man ?? now ? a Strictly contender too ??,’ wrote one happy fan after he made his announcement. However, another posted: ‘I will honestly do everything in my power to prevent Chris Evans from doing Strictly. #theoneshow’.
‘Chris Evans is a big name for next year – well done @bbcstrictly – that’s more like it. Alan Carr now please #Strictly’. But only time will tell if both of their wishes have been granted…
