From monarchs to duchesses, princesses to countesses, the royal women of the UK have plenty of official style advisors at their beck and call. But according to recent reports, there’s one member of the family who’s taking matters into their own hands and leading the pack when it comes to their sartorial choices: Sophie Wessex.
Sophie, who is married to the Queen’s youngest son Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, is slowly emerging as something of a secret weapon when it comes to the royal family’s wardrobes, and has even selected clothes for Her Majesty herself.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, bespoke shirt maker Emma Willis, whose ready-to-wear styles start from £200, revealed that Sophie is part of of her client base – and she’s not just placing orders for herself.
‘I’ve made many, many clothes for the Countess of Wessex – when I used to do a full women’s collection,’ the designer explained. ‘She bought a shirt for her husband, Prince Edward, once. And she also bought a shirt for her mother-in-law, so I’ve made a shirt for the Queen!’
However, Queen Elizabeth II isn’t alone when it comes to taking Sophie’s advice when it comes to what to wear.
At the end of last year, denim designer Donna Ida let slip that the Countess of Wessex has been sharing her favourite buys with Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, especially when it comes to off-duty cool.
‘“My friend, a stylist, is best friends with Sophie Wessex, and Sophie buys from us,’ Donna explained to the same paper in October 2019. ‘[Sophie] got our black Sadie jumpsuit for herself and then asked for one for Kate. She said: “Kate wants one, can I get one as well?”’
Of course, we’re not likely to see either Sophie or Kate in a denim jumpsuit for an official engagement, but when they’re not shopping for formal occasions, it appears that the two have rather similar tastes.
We wonder who else Sophie is picking pieces for behind the scenes…
