A shearling jacket is a must-have for your autumn/winter wardrobe. Not only are they super warm, but they’re right on trend and come in a huge range of styles, too. Originally, ‘shearling’ referred to leather from a sheep with the wool left on, and it was an extremely effective material for keeping warm in pre-central heating times.
While you will find real shearling jackets in a vintage store, the ones you’ll find on the high street today will be predominantly faux, or borg, as it’s technically called. In some places, you might find faux shearling jackets referred to as teddy jackets, for the material’s resemblance to the fur of a teddy bear.
There’s one shearling jacket in particular we’re seeing all over Instagram right now, and it comes from Scandi designer label Totême, which is renowned for its neutral colour palettes, muted tones, simple silhouettes and sustainable fabrics.
The Totême number features a fluffy fabric with leather lining and a hook fastening – a welcome change to the usual (but much-loved) aviator style of shearling jacket. The coat works particularly well paired with a pair of on-trend leather or faux leather trousers, ankle boots and a Breton stripe jumper.
Totême’s jacket comes in at an eye-watering £1,730, and while it’s lovely, it’s not affordable for most of us. But worry not! To help you get the look for less, we’ve found some similar shearling jackets on the high street right now, from just £19.99.
