The 5 styles of sandals you need in your wardrobe this summer

Now that the sun has finally decided to grace us with its presence here in the UK and lockdown restrictions have eased, we declare sandal season officially open.

Having spent the best part of the last year in slippers, you might not have taken much interest in sandal trends over the past 12 months. But don’t worry, we’re here to guide you through the top 5 sandal trends you should be thinking about adding to your wardrobe this summer. Now all you need to do is book that pedicure…

Summer 2021 sandal trends:

Strappy sandals

The strappy sandal trend is super versatile and will go with almost any outfit. Go for multiple thin straps on a heeled sandal to add elegant, feminine energy to a casual jeans and T-shirt combo, or choose chunky straps on a flat sandal to add interest to a midi skirt outfit. When in doubt, the rule of thumb is the more straps the better.

Padded sandals

The padded sandal trend is the perfect (and most comfortable) way to transition from a year of slipper-wearing to donning ‘proper’ shoes again. All the drama of a fashionable shoe with all the comfort of a slipper? Say no more.

Chunky sandals

Another trend we’re seriously in love with (because it’s as stylish as it is comfortable) is chunky sandals. Thick soles and multiple heavy-duty velcro straps, these are the ‘sensible’ shoes your mum always wanted you to buy (this time with the approval of fashion influencers).

Elevated flip flops

If there is one sandal trend influencers are currently loving more than chunky sandals, it’s chunky leather flip flops. The Row’s original £725 pair spawned a thousand copies across the high street – we particularly love the look of Next’s pair (below) as they also tick the padded sandal trend box, too.

Mules

Mules were in last summer and they haven’t gone anywhere this year (thankfully as we’ve barely worn ours yet). Elegant yet fun, a candy-coloured mule will perfectly elevate an otherwise casual outfit, as well as being the perfect wedding guest shoe.
