Duchesses Kate and Meghan, and Princess Eugenie had more than a few things in common when it came to their wedding day looks. All three brides wore long-sleeved gowns, all three chose tiaras as a hair accessory, and all three opted for fresh, natural make-up that enhanced their features and photographed beautifully.
Take a closer look, however, and you’ll see that there’s yet another thing that all three royals wore on their wedding days – and it’s something that transcends the boundaries of bridal beauty to become an everyday staple.
Each member of the royal family reportedly chose a nude nail polish from high-street brand Essie their fingertips on their big day – Kate in the shade Allure (combined with Bourjois So Laque Nail Enamel in Rose Lounge), and Meghan and Eugenie in Ballet Slippers – and the matching choices are certainly not a coincidence.
Ballet Slippers in particular is said to have been a favourite of family matriarch Queen Elizabeth for over 30 years, and according to several different outlets, is the one of the few acceptable colours for a royal woman to wear on their nails, which must be ‘neat, clean, and groomed at all times.’
The bottle first became Her Majesty’s go-to back in 1989, when her hairdresser penned a letter to the company’s founder, Essie Weingarten, to request a bottle of the bestselling polish. The rest, as they say, is history – and it’s therefore unsurprising that it’s become a staple in the family ever since.
The demure look is a change in particular for Eugenie, who had been pictured with much quirkier nail designs in the past, including a a Union Jack manicure for the Jubilee in 2012 and a Christmas-inspired manicure back in 2015.
However, as both Kate and Meghan have both been pictured with usually neutral nails since they become the Duchesses of Cambridge and Sussex respectively, it’s likely that the princess will stick with Essie’s classic nudes from now on.
If you’re hoping to copy the nail polish favoured by the royal family yourself, you’ll be pleased to hear that Essie nail varnish is priced at just £7.99, and is available from major pharmacies and beauty stores. Now all you need is a regal diamond ring to set it off…
