Everything we learnt about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in the James Corden interview

In last night’s episode of The Late Late Show, host James Corden took it upon himself to welcome his fellow Brit in LA and close friend, Prince Harry, to the city, by taking him on an open top bus tour around town.

A lot happened within the 17-minute segment, from sipping (and spilling) tea to James trying to convince Harry to buy the house from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. They also took part in an extreme obstacle course, where Harry showed off his skills from his army training days, and we found out plenty of new information about the royal, from Meghan’s sweet nickname for him to what Archie’s first word was.

Here’s a run-down of everything we learnt about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in the James Corden interview…

He sort of knows the words to the Fresh Prince rap

James Corden introduced Prince Harry to the current owners of the house from the The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, but not before convincing the royal to do a bit of the rap – which he knew most of the words too. Harry even went inside and used their toilet, proving he already felt quite at home there!

Meghan’s nickname for Prince Harry

While on the Fresh Prince doorstep, James video calls Meghan to get her thoughts on the move, a conversation in which we find out Meghan affectionately calls her husband ‘Haz’.

‘I didn’t know we were calling you Haz now,’ said James, to which Harry quickly replied, ‘Well you’re not my wife.’

When Harry knew Meghan was ‘the one’

‘The second date I was starting to think, wow this is pretty special,’ said the Duke of Sussex. ‘It wasn’t so much where we went it, it was just the way we hit it off with each other and we were just so comfortable in each other’s company… We went from zero to sixty in the first two months.’ Sweet!

He also revealed that, when dating a royal, everything happens backwards, with going round to each other’s houses first and dinners out at restaurants and going to the cinema coming later.

A typical night in for the couple

It sounds like a typical night in for Harry and Meghan is much like it is for the rest of us – teatime, bath time and bedtime for Archie, followed by ‘Meg’ (as Harry affectionally called her) maybe cooking a meal or getting a takeaway in and then watching TV in bed, specifically Jeopardy or ‘maybe a bit of Netflix’.

His thoughts on The Crown – and who he thinks should play him

Everyone wants to know what the royal family really make of The Crown, and Harry was surprisingly honest with his views on the show: ‘They don’t pretend to be news, it’s fictional, but it’s loosely based on the truth, so it’s not strictly accurate… It gives you a rough idea about what that lifestyle, what the pressures of putting duty and service above family and everything else, what can come from that.’

He then revealed that he thinks Damien Lewis should be cast as him in the show.

Archie’s first word

Harry revealed that Archie is ‘hysterical’ and has ‘an amazing personality’, and that his first word was crocodile!

The Queen bought them a waffle maker for Christmas

‘My grandmother asked us what Archie wanted for Christmas and Meg said a waffle maker. She sent us a waffle maker for Archie,’ the prince revealed, adding that they now have waffles for breakfast most days.

Why they moved to LA

‘It was never walking away, it was stepping back rather than stepping down,’ Harry explained when James Corden asked why the couple walked away from the royal family. ‘As far as I’m concerned, whatever decisions are made on that side, I will never walk away, I will always be contributing. My life has always been public service so wherever I am in the world, it will be the same thing.’
