Platinum Jubilee events, from afternoon teas to parties in the park

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee will be celebrated with a long weekend of partying and pageantry from 2nd to 5th June 2022, but if you haven’t got tickets to the official concert or organised a street party, there are still plenty of events you can attend to mark the special occasion. From afternoon teas to spa days to large-scale picnics, we’ve rounded up some of the best events across the country to help you celebrate this remarkable occasion.

Balmoral Castle

Where better to raise a toast to the Queen that at Balmoral, her Scottish holiday home? To mark this special occasion, you can enjoy a Platinum Jubilee afternoon tea alongside a tour of the castle and its grounds.

Edinburgh City Centre

The Salvation Army will hold a Jubilee Celebration on Saturday 4th June (1-4pm) in Edinburgh City Centre, which will include live music from the Sound of Seventeen Big Band and the Edinburgh Telephone Choir, street party food, kids’ craft activities and a special display marking 140 years history of The Salvation Army in Edinburgh

Glenapp Castle

There are two Platinum Jubilee afternoon tea options available at Glenapp Castle from 1st to 30th June this year. The Azalea Jubilee Afternoon Tea will be served up in private areas for between six and 14 guests, each bursting with wonderful botanical displays. The Castle Jubilee Afternoon Tea, meanwhile, takes places in the drawing room with views to the Ailsa Craig and beyond.

Cardiff

A special concert will be held in Cardiff on Saturday 4th June, featuring Aled Jones, Bonnie Tyler,  West End and Broadway star John Owen Jones, drumming weatherman Owain Wyn Evans, funnyman Mike Doyle, the Pendyrus Male Voice Choir,  and the Welsh Pops Orchestra, among others.

The Celtic Manor Resort, Newport

Head to the Celtic Manor Resort for a big Jubilee street party on the rooftop garden. It’ll be a celebration for all the family with games and entertainment for children (including bouncy castles, puppet shows and face painting).

Meanwhile, for the grown-ups there will be live music as well as Pimm’s and champagne pop-up stands, with gorgeous views overlooking the Welsh countryside.

Northern Ireland

Belfast

On Saturday 4th June, 2 Royal Avenue will be transformed into 1950s Belfast allowing visitors to take a step back in time and get a flavour of life in the city 70 years ago. The event will showcase some of the city’s best local talent through photography, film, fashion, song and storytelling, taking a creative look at people’s lives in Belfast in 1952.

Truman’s Social Club

If you don’t fancy schlepping to The Mall, then try out its counterpart at this Blackhorse Road venue. Truman’s Social Club will be lined with real trees and draped in Union Jack flags, with a huge projection of Buckingham Palace and thrones for photo opportunities. Across the four-day weekend, there will be a raft of events such as a live music singalong and a classic village fete, in addition to a Big Lunch for the community with a baking competition judged by Great British Bake Off contestant Dan Beasley-Harling. There will also be mass karaoke, a fancy-dress party and an all-day Caribbean Carnival.

Great Scotland Yard Hotel is set to launch a five-star Dog Jubilee Afternoon Tea – the perfect way to pamper your pooch! The hotel has teamed up with canine nutrition experts, Talula Eats, to create this delicious dog-friendly afternoon tea, but don’t worry, there’s a feast for dog-owners, too.

Pups will enjoy three tiers of treats in finely decorated China bowls filled with fresh organic meat and vegetables, a slice of ‘homemade doggie cake’ and ‘dogestive biscuits with a pupcake’. Meanwhile, you can tuck into finger sandwich flavours such as coronation chicken and pickled onion on granary bread, and smoked salmon, asparagus, horseradish and avruga caviar on pain de mie. Freshly baked warm scones are accompanied by Cornish clotted cream and rhubarb & elderflower jam, teacakes and delicate pastries.

Drag fans listen up! Head Chef Elena Savchuck has taken inspiration from the classic British afternoon tea, with added touches from Amelia to create a fun and unique twist to the menu. Expect to dine on treats like Choco Cheesecake Lollipops, Mini Lemon Tart, Snickers & Passion Fruit Graffiti Bonbons and scones of course.

City Cruises

For an elegant, evening celebration, the Platinum Jubilee Gala Dinner Cruise is the perfect opportunity to get dressed up and take in the spectacular views of the London skyline at sunset – complete with a glass of champagne in hand. Mayfair

One of London’s most glamorous districts is holding a spectacular street party on Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd June. From 12pm-7pm each day, the iconic neighbourhood will be transformed into a free majestic summer fête with live entertainment, plus mouthwatering food and drink from some of London’s best loved dining spots. There’ll also be a communal feast running down North Audley Street (above) with a 200ft banqueting table, curated by Lay London, featuring a kaleidoscope of wild flowers.

Hotel Café Royal

Hotel Café Royal will offer a quintessentially royal afternoon tea experience throughout the summer, in celebration of Her Royal Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee. Curated by the hotel’s new Executive Pastry Chef, Loic Carbonnet, menu items include Sovereign’s sandwiches inspired by the royal residencies, including Balmoral – a smoked salmon, dill infused cream cheese and marinated cucumber sandwich, and Buckingham – roast beef, Buckingham seasoning, pickled celeriac and horseradish in tomato bread.

Sweet delicacies replicate Her Royal Majesty’s fashion accessories, including the Shoe of a Monarch – a shortbread crumble, caramelised banana and chocolate ganache, and Crowning Glory – a Royal Hat – vanilla mousse, almond sable, red fruit compote.

Afternoon tea will be served in the Grade II listed Oscar Wilde Lounge, decorated with mirrored walls, ornate gold detailing and painted ceilings, fit for a queen.

The Langham

From 25 May to 26 June, guests will be able to indulge in a Jubilee afternoon tea in Palm Court. The limited-edition afternoon tea will include a selection of decadent treats inspired by the Queen’s favourites, with many ingredients used holding a Royal Warrant. Sandwiches will include Scottish smoked salmon, sour cream and dill and Coronation chicken, whilst a Ploughman’s cheese scone will be featured as well as a traditional sweet option.

These will be followed by a selection of pastries each inspired by a different member of the Royal family, such as The Royal Mint with mint parfait, chocolate sable and cream and The Prince’s Favourite with griddled Welsh cake, peach and whipped ganache, and The Sovereign’s Cake, a sharing dessert comprising crunchy Breton, caraibe cremeaux and soft caramel.

Sandringham

On Friday 4th June, Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins OBE will perform at Sandringham with a symphony orchestra and the Military Wives choirs. Katherine is a royal favourite; she was invited to sing ‘God Save The Queen’ at Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee, performed at Her Majesty’s Coronation Concerts at Buckingham Palace and sang by special request at Her Majesty’s 90th birthday celebrations at Windsor Castle.

Windsor

Windsor’s Long Walk is playing host to a great big picnic – the Big Lunch – on Sunday 5th June, and everyone is invited. Bring your food, friends and a Union Jack flag or two to enjoy the festivities. There will also be giant screens where you can watch the national Platinum Jubilee Pageant, which promises to be a spectacular parade, combining street arts, theatre, music, circus, carnival and costume.

The Queen is famously horse mad, so a trip to the races feels like a very appropriate way to pay tribute to her. The 3rd June will see the Cazoo Derby Ladies Day return to Epsom Downs for another year. One of the most unmissable occasions in the racing calendar, this year’s Ladies Day falls on a Bank Holiday for the first time and promises to be bigger and better than ever as it coincides with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Bill’s is marking the Platinum Jubilee with a special menu paying tribute to Her Majesty, available from Monday 30th May. Start your day with the Queen Almighty Breakfast (£15.95) featuring fried eggs, smoked streaky bacon, Cumberland sausage, roast tomato, crispy rosemary potatoes, baked beans, black pudding, and toast, or for a more lavish dish, opt for the Jubilee Royal (£14.95) with toasted English muffin with smoked salmon, spinach, golden poached eggs, Prosecco hollandaise and shavings of truffle. What could be more British than Fish and Chips? Bill’s will be serving up their very own Cod Save the Queen (£13.95) merging two classic British favourites and featuring a crispy cod goujon burger with lemon mayo, crushed peas, pickled red onions and rosemary fries, all wrapped in bespoke branded royal newspaper.

Finish off your meal with a traditional English dessert the Platinum Eton Mess (£6.50) with blueberries, strawberries, crushed meringue and whipped white chocolate cream. Cocktail lovers will also be able to sip, savour and enjoy a series of tantalising, regal tipples, including The Crown Jewel (£5.95) with Beefeater Gin, Elderflower, Raspberry, and mint, and The Red, White & Blue (£5.95) incorporating Beefeater Gin, Wyborowa Vodka, Blue Curacao, blood orange and lemon.

All day Danish bakery Ole & Steen have announced their exclusive ‘Ole & Queen’ Jubilee cake, available for the Bank Holiday celebrations from 31st May to 6th June. In collaboration with the much-loved Meringue Girls, the delicious cake consists of light white chocolate and lemon sponge base, topped with a generous pillow of summery strawberry buttercream, whipped cream and sprinkled with a selection of fresh British strawberries and blueberries.
