The nation’s favourite cocktail has been revealed

When restaurants and bars opened up again post-lockdown, we were desperate to get our hands on a professionally made cocktail. Our homemade ‘throw it all together and hope for the best’ mixtures weren’t quite hitting the spot. But which drinks actually get ordered the most? Just Eat for Business conducted research into the UK’s most popular cocktails to find out.

Looking at the UK’s most popular recipe site and comparing the highest average rating to the number of reviews left, Just Eat for Business found that Espresso Martinis took the top spot as the most popular cocktail among Brits. The caffeine-filled drink typically contains vodka, espresso coffee, coffee liqueur, sugar syrup or vanilla syrup, and the all-important three coffee beans on top to garnish.

Other classic cocktails like the Mojito, Pina Colada and Sex on the Beach followed behind. UK summers are always a bit unpredictable, so it’s no surprise to see the nation loves a fruity cocktail to make us feel like we’re on holiday.

Mojitos tend to have a more low-key flavour, containing just white rum, mint, lime and sugar. Pina Coladas, on the other hand, are definitely for sweet-toothed cocktail drinkers as they are made up of pineapple juice, coconut cream and white rum.

The study also revealed vodka is the most popular spirit, followed by rum and gin. Citrus fruits like lemons, limes and oranges were the favourite fruit accompaniment in both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

For those who don’t drink alcohol, a Virgin Mojito was deemed the most popular mocktail. On the other end of the cocktail scale sits Black Russians, Cuba Libres and Bloody Marys, which had the lowest rankings.

London-based mixologist Harp Mann commented on the findings: ‘Cocktails have seen a great resurgence since the dark days of the 80s where sweetened watered down drinks were bedecked with umbrellas.

‘Cocktails offer theatre, a treat, opulence, fun, good times – essentially an experience – so there’s the social element of them. Mixed drinks offer a great way to experience new flavours, spirits and aperitifs, more premium or better quality ingredients too.’
