Meghan Markle’s favourite cocktail is a twist on a classic Pimm’s

The fact that Meghan Markle is something of a wine connoisseur is no secret. In fact, her now-defunct lifestyle blog, The Tig, was named after tignanello, a red which the then-actress said gave her an ‘ah ha’ moment when it came to understanding ‘the body, the legs or structure’ of the drink.

‘The Tig is my nickname for me getting it. Not just wine, but everything,’ the Duchess of Sussex told PEOPLE magazine in a previous interview.

Now, thanks to a recently resurfaced post from that very website, we also know that Meghan is partial to a cocktail or two – in particular, a take on the summer classic Pimm’s, which she dubbed her very own ‘Tig Cup’.

Sharing her recipe with her followers back when The Tig was still active, Meghan explained: ‘While I generally opt to whet my whistle with a glass of rosé or crisp Sauvignon Blanc, sometimes the day calls for a cocktail. Having a love of all things Brit, I wanted to do a twist on their signature Pimm’s Cup.’

Meghan added that she’d taken cues from ‘fresh and vibrant farmers’ market ingredients’ to create a ‘guaranteed crowd pleaser’ of gin studded with mint, cucumber, grapefruit, radishes and even celery.

Meghan Markle’s Tig Cup cocktail recipe

  • Fresh mint
  • Fresh ribbons of cucumber
  • Grapefruit rind
  • Shavings of radish
  • Thin stalks of celery
  • Ice
  • Lime
  • Your favourite gin, soda water, tonic water and maraschino cherry liqueur

While the cherry liqueur may seem like a surprising addition, Meghan advised to not be scared of its sweetness: ‘I personally loathe syrupy sweet drinks but this has just enough of a subtle sweetness that it really acts as more of a back note in the drink,’ she detailed in the method.

To make the drink yourself, split the fruit, veg and plenty of ice across two glasses, shake ‘a couple of ounces’ of the gin and a splash of cherry liqueur, then pour ‘a two count of tonic and a three count of soda water’ and top with the alcohol mix.

Finish with a twist of grapefruit and serve – preferably on a hot, sunny day, shared with friends and family – for a slice of summertime bliss, Meghan-style. We wonder if she’s made a batch for the rest of the royals yet.
