There’s something about the hype of celebrity and royal weddings we just can’t resist. Who will be invited? What will the bride’s outfit look like? Who will be the bridesmaids and best man? So many questions! So forgive us for getting excited whenever we get a little more insight into the behind-the-scenes action of a famous wedding.
One of the last major weddings before the pandemic was that of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, in 2018. We already know some details about the off-camera happenings – from which nail polish Meghan wore for her big day, to her lashes and perfume. But now, the song Meghan requested at her wedding reception with Harry has been revealed.
You may already know that Luther actor-turned-music artist Idris Elba was a DJ during the wedding reception. On 2 April, Idris co-hosted BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Rap Show with Tiffany Calver and discussed some of the best moments from the after wedding party.
Idris was asked which songs got people up and dancing, and he replied Whitney Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ was a hit. He then went on to say ‘Still Dre’ by Dr Dre was also a favourite, and was requested by none other than the Duchess of Sussex herself.
‘Still DRE by Dr Dre went off! It was Meghan’s choice,’ he said.
Idris Elba previously spoke about the pressure he felt to do a good job, while on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, saying the royal couple are ‘good friends and I wanted to make sure they had a good time, so there was a lot of pressure’ and that it was the ‘most stressful’ gig he’s done.
According to the authors of Finding Freedom, a biography of Harry and Meghan, the royals chose ‘I’m in Love’ by Wilson Pickett as the song for their first dance as a married couple at the wedding reception.
