Duchesses Meghan and Kate always look impeccable – but there’s a detail about their outfits that you might not yet have noticed.
Royal watchers have begun to notice that members of the family always seem to wear their handbags on their left hand. We know that this sounds like a rather odd observation, but it turns out there’s a special reason why the likes of Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton live by the unwritten rule.
According to royal expert Myka Meier of Beaumont Etiquette (who was trained by a former member of The Queen’s Household), it is all down to royal standards. As we know, there are a lot of guidelines that have to be followed by the royal figures. This one in particular is designed to make it easier when greeting people, and it actually makes a lot of sense.
Whether it’s a clutch, a box or a tote, holding any extra items in the left hand leaves the right hand free for greeting members of the public. Smart, right?
Meier explained this via an Instagram post, sharing: ‘When entering a room or event, handbags or briefcases are held in the LEFT hand so that your right hand stays open to meet, greet and shake hands! Prince Charles does this too.’
