Political unrest in Myanmar (formerly Burma) coupled with the global devastation caused by the pandemic has seen much of the country’s population slide into abject poverty. Determined to take action, part-Burmese British Vogue contributing beauty editor Kathleen Baird-Murray has joined forces with PR, Jo Jones, the co-founder of hygiene poverty charity, Beauty Banks in an effort to raise funds for those affected by the devastation.

In collaboration with GoFundMe, Kathleen and Jo have launched MAY DAY FOR MYANMAR, a grassroots fundraising campaign that will see proceeds go to United World Schools, Prospect Burma and Medical Action Myanmar.

Kathleen said, ‘Our MAY DAY FOR MYANMAR campaign is about humanity. We want to show people in Myanmar that the world cares; that their suffering is not being ignored. Jo and I believe that we are all of us heroes – whether we’re out there on the front line fighting for the freedoms we care passionately about or digging deep into our pockets to show others that their actions count for something. At a time when there is so much sadness in the world, it’s life-affirming to know there are many kind and generous people out there who have been moved by the plight of the Burmese people.’

The duo is bringing together luxury fashion, beauty and fine jewellery brands such as The Vampire’s Wife, Orlebar Brown, Aromatherapy Associates, Dr Barbara Sturm and Elemis in a bid to raise money that will be divided between three carefully selected charities.

So, how can we donate and how could we win? Jo explained, ‘Our aim is to create a ‘fundraising-campaign-with-benefits,’ offering people wonderful incentives to get involved and part with their hard-earned money. It’s been a tough and uncertain year for all of us so it was important to Kathleen and me that the campaign gives back too to those who opt to support us. We’ve been blown away by the brands who have stepped forward to help and the roster of prizes we have to give away.

‘The mechanic is pretty straightforward – purchase a £10 ‘digital ticket’ on our GoFundMe page and we virtually draw the winners LIVE on Friday 7th May via IGTV LIVE on our Instagram page’.
