There are some words that catch our attention immediately and ‘free shopping’ is certainly a phrase that piques our interest. Now, money-saving hero, Martin Lewis had us intrigued when he shared a nifty hack to help people get ‘free’ shopping at Sainsbury’s.
Have you found you’ve been spending more on your food shop during lockdown? In January alone, spending in supermarkets rose at an annual rate of 17 per cent, but thanks to this hack, you might be able to save hundreds.
On the 100th episode of the Martin Lewis Money Show on Thursday, the presenter revealed you can get £184 to spend in Sainsbury’s if you have an American Express rewards gold card.
But how? Thankfully, he broke it down for us.
‘It’s about the American Express rewards gold credit card,’ he said. ‘If you’re accepted for that and you spent £3,000 in three months, then you get 23,000 Amex reward points, which includes a 20,000 point bonus.’
He continued: ‘The first thing you do is convert 23,000 Amex points into 23,000 Avios points. Then, because you can now swap Avios points into Nectar, you convert that into 36,000 Nectar points, which you can then spend at Nectar partners, including Sainsbury’s, where it’s worth £184 – nearly double what they would typically suggest.’
Lewis shared the new trick where you can turn Avios points into Nectar points, and vice versa, but warned shoppers they should only do this if their normal spending is over £1,000 a month. That’s a lot of shopping!
To convert points, account holders need to link their Nectar and British Airways Executive Club accounts, which you can do on either website by selecting the ‘convert your points’ option.
So, there you have it. A roundabout way to earn some ‘free’ shopping and give those purse strings a bit of a break over Easter.
