Malibu fans, we’ve found your new favourite summer drink

If you’re the type of person that prefers a fruity cocktail to a glass of wine or chilled cider, you’ve probably got a bottle of Malibu in your drinks cabinet.

The coconut-infused white rum, which we’ve all been adding to our pina coladas and daiquiris since 1982, conjures up instant memories of beach holidays and barbecues from the very first sip. And now there’s a summery new twist to get excited about: Malibu Strawberry Spritz.

Malibu Strawberry Spritz
Malibu

The pre-mixed sparkling tipple, which mixes the traditional tropical flavour of Malibu with berries for a new taste sensation, launches at Tesco on 20 May, and we predict that it’ll be the easy-drinking option of the year.

At 11 per cent ABV, it’s a lower-alcohol option that original Malibu, which is 21 per cent – although as ever, it should be enjoyed responsibly.

It’s also totally low maintenance, as there’s no mixers or extra garnishes required; to serve, you simply simply pop the top and pour over ice, meaning it’s ideal for adding to a picnic hamper or party where you might not have access to all of your usual kitchen kit.

If you are drinking it at home, however, a slice or two of fresh strawberry will intensify the flavour even further.

As a further public service announcement, we’d like to take this opportunity to remind you that a passionfruit version of Malibu also exists, and is just as sweet and delicious (think a Solero ice lolly in a glass).

It’s a classic rum rather than a spritz like the strawberry variety, so add it to your favourite lemonade, soda water or citrus blend for a refreshing long drink that’ll keep you cool no matter how high the temperatures soar.

Between this, Aldi’s three quirky new gin flavours and Asda’s latest Spanish-inspired spirit line, we can safely say 2019 was the year we got totally spoiled for choice when it comes to stocking our bar carts. Sip sip hooray!
