During the summer the BBC confirmed the news we’d all been so desperate to hear since 2015 – the return of its hit drama, Luther.
It’s been three years since we last saw Idris Elba in his iconic role as DCI Luther but by the sounds of things, we won’t have to wait much longer as season 5 will be hitting our small screens sooner than you think.
Back in June, Elba took to his personal social media pages to reveal the return of the show with a short trailer ending with a cryptic ‘coming soon’ announcement. But now that the BBC have released their festive line-up, we can officially expect season 5 to premiere this Christmas. Hurrah!
Here’s everything you need to know about the new season before it’s back on BBC One.
What will the plot of Luther season 5 be?
Things are about to get very dark according to the official synopsis for the new season which reads: ‘As a series of monstrous killings becomes ever more audacious, Luther and new recruit DS Catherine Halliday are confounded by a tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an unspeakable horror.
‘But even as the case brings him closer than ever to the nature of true evil, a reluctant Luther must also face the ghosts of his own past. Striding back into the line of fire, he must choose who to protect… and who to sacrifice.’
‘Whatever his next move, it will have devastating consequences for those around him – and will change John Luther forever.’
Fans will remember that the last season was full of shocking twists and turns, so we can expect the same this time around.
Someone's got unfinished business.

Who will star in Luther season 5?
Luther fans will know that the question on everyone’s lips when the new season was announced was, will Alice Morgan (played by Ruth Wilson) return? Well the answer to that is yes. We know, she was killed off in a special one-off episode. But it’s not the first time a TV character has resurrected.
As well as this, original cast members including Dermot Crowley, Patrick Malahide, and Michael Smiley as DSU Martin Schenk, George Cornelius, and Benny ‘Deadhead’ Silver will all be returning for the fifth season. We will also be introduced to Luther’s new partner, Catherine Halliday, who will be played by Wunmi Mosaku – viewers may recognise Mosaku from ITV’s Vera.
When will Luther season 5 air?
The BBC has announced that Luther will return on New Year’s Day, which means we don’t have too long to wait now.
